Chapter 4 - Financial Warfare

For the next three hours, the penthouse transformed into an electronic war room. While the city slept below us, illuminated by millions of tiny lights, I launched an unprecedented, aggressive financial assault against Julian Croft’s financial empire.

Using the private account keys retrieved from Emma’s encrypted drive, I identified the three primary shell corporations Croft used to pay his operational expenses: Aegis Global Holdings, Blackwood Capital, and Vanguard Logistics.

"Maya," I commanded, typing rapidly on my high-frequency trading rig. "Initiate a short-sell cascade on all publicly traded assets affiliated with Blackwood Capital. Dump ten million shares through our offshore accounts in London."

"Executing," Maya reported. "The sudden influx of sell orders is triggering automated stop-loss algorithms across Wall Street. Blackwood’s stock price is plunging."

"Good. Now use our institutional reserves to trigger a margin call on Aegis Global," I directed, my fingers flying over the keyboard. I was using the full weight of my firm's multi-billion-dollar capital pool to crush Croft's liquidity. I wasn't just trading; I was destroying his financial foundation line by line.

By 03:00 AM, the panic hit Croft’s network. His primary accounts were frozen by foreign banking regulators automated compliance systems due to suspicious short-selling patterns and flagged transactions from the decrypted ledger.

My secure line rang. It was an unlisted number.

I picked it up, putting it on speaker.

"Miller," a harsh, raspy voice growled through the speaker. It was Julian Croft.

"Julian," I said smoothly, leaning back in my chair. "You're calling late. Having trouble with your overseas liquidity?"

A moment of silence hung on the line, followed by a cold, dry chuckle. "So, the rumors are true. The ice-cold CEO of Miller Capital has a heart after all. I wondered how long it would take you to realize why those two little brats ended up in your office."

"Where is she, Julian?" I demanded, my voice dropping an octave, filled with lethal promise.

"She’s currently sitting in my study at my Westbury estate, being quite uncooperative," Croft replied casually. "She seems to think you're going to rescue her. Tell me, Jason... do you really think crashing my stock prices gives you leverage over me? I have armed guards at every door. You have a desk and a computer."

"I have your entire life on a flash drive, Julian," I countered. "I have the routing numbers for your illegal Swiss accounts, the names of your political bribes, and the full manifest of your illegal shipments. In exactly two hours, when the New York Stock Exchange opens, that entire database will be released automatically to the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Interpol."

I paused, letting the silence stretch between us.

"Unless," I continued, "you release Emma unharmed. Unconditionally."

Croft let out a low, menacing laugh. "You always were an arrogant bastard, Jason. You think you can bully me with spreadsheets? If you release those files, I go to prison for life. Which means I have absolutely nothing left to lose. If I go down, Emma dies first. Then I send my team to Fifth Avenue to collect those boys and finish what I started."

"Touch my children, Croft, and I won't just ruin you," I said softly, every nerve in my body burning with absolute rage. "I will personally hunt you down and bury you."

"Bring the drive to my Westbury estate by 05:00 AM. Alone," Croft ordered. "No police. No federal agents. You trade the drive for the girl. If I see a single flashing light or a tactical team, she takes a bullet before you make it past the gate."

The line went dead.

Marcus immediately stepped forward. "You can't go alone, Jason. It’s a trap. The moment you step onto that property with the drive, he’ll execute both of you."

"I know," I said calmly, looking up at the monitors. "Which is why I'm not bringing the drive. And I'm certainly not going alone."

"What's the plan?" Marcus asked, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.

"Croft thinks I'm a corporate softie who hides behind lawyers and security guards," I said, rising from my seat. "He expects me to arrive terrified, begging for Emma's life. We are going to use his own arrogance against him. Maya, keep the automated release timer set for 06:00 AM. Marcus, get your tactical team ready. We are going to breach that estate under cover of darkness."

Before leaving, I walked back into the guest room. The boys were stirring slightly. I knelt by the bed and gently brushed a lock of hair from Liam’s forehead.

He opened his eyes, blinking sleepily. "Daddy?"

"I have to go out for a little bit, Liam," I whispered softly. "I'm going to bring Mommy home."

Liam sat up, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the silver locket. He held it out to me. "Take this. Mommy told me that whenever you hold it, it brings good luck."

I took the tiny, warm locket into my palm, pressing it tightly against my heart. "Thank you, buddy. Keep your brother safe while I'm gone."

"I will," Liam promised solemnly. "Bring Mommy back."

I closed my hand around the locket, feeling its sharp metal edges press into my skin. "I promise."

Ten minutes later, dressed in black tactical gear provided by Marcus’s team, I stepped into the private elevator. The corporate CEO who had lived for balance sheets and quarterly profits was gone. In his place stood a father, ready to do whatever was necessary to pull the woman he loved from the mouth of hell.
