Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm in Lincoln

The rain was lashing sideways against the tall glass windows of the Mercer & Sons corporate headquarters in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. Inside the fifth-floor executive boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with expensive cigar smoke and quiet self-congratulation.
Richard Mercer sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, swirling amber scotch in a heavy crystal glass. His silver hair was impeccably groomed, and his tailored charcoal suit screamed conservative wealth and untouchable power.
To his right, Troy was tapping furiously on a tablet, while Melissa checked her diamond-encrusted wristwatch with an audible sigh of annoyance.
"I still say leaving him in the mountains was sloppy," Melissa muttered, crossing her arms. "What if he finds his way back? What if he tells people we abandoned him?"
"He won't," Richard said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "The local sheriff's department in Colorado accepted our statement hook, line, and sinker. Daniel is a broken man who couldn't handle the wilderness after his wife's passing. The official report states he suffered a complete mental break, wandered off with the boy, and we barely escaped with our lives. No court in the country is going to listen to a discredited accountant with a history of severe psychological trauma."
"Besides," Troy added with a smug grin, "our legal team has already initiated emergency guardianship proceedings for Noah. Once the courts declare Daniel unfit, we take custody of the boy, clean out whatever scraps are left of his estate, and seal the family trust forever. It's clean."
Elaine, sitting quietly in the corner near the window, dabbed a lace handkerchief at her dry eyes. "He was always so sensitive," she murmured, playing her part to perfection. "Ever since Claire died, he just... stopped functioning. We did what we had to do for the family name."
Before anyone else could speak, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crash.
The room went dead silent.
Standing in the doorway wasn't a disheveled, desperate Daniel Mercer wearing torn hiking boots.
I stood there in a crisp, charcoal-gray bespoke suit, my hair neatly trimmed, holding a slim leather briefcase. Behind me stood Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI, flanked by two federal marshals in tactical vests.
Richard stood up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. "What the hell is the meaning of this? Security! How did these men get up here?"
"Security is currently downstairs, Richard, answering some very interesting questions about corporate data destruction and server tampering," I said, my voice ice-cold as I stepped into the boardroom, my hard-soled shoes clicking rhythmically against the floor.
"Daniel?" Melissa gasped, her face draining of all color. "You... you're supposed to be—"
"Dead in a ditch? Or locked away in a psychiatric ward?" I finished for her, walking right up to the mahogany table and placing my briefcase down with a sharp thud. "Sorry to disappoint you, sis. The mountains are tough, but surviving your brand of family toxicity is much harder preparation."
Richard puffed out his chest, attempting to project the booming authority that had cowed me for most of my life. "You are trespassing, Daniel. You have lost your mind. Get these federal agents out of my building right now, or I will have our legal team sue you into oblivion!"
"You don't have a legal team anymore, Dad," I replied calmly, opening the briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of federal warrants. "Not once they realize their corporate sponsor has been using them as accomplices in a multi-million-dollar land fraud syndicate."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, flashing his gold shield and a federal arrest warrant bearing Richard and Troy's names.
"Richard Mercer, Troy Miller. You're under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate identity theft utilizing unwitting straw beneficiaries," Vance announced, his voice echoing off the boardroom walls. "Hands behind your backs. Now."
