Part 2: The Secret She Carried Alone

Claire's hands trembled slightly as she adjusted the blanket around the baby boy.
The silence between us felt endless.
Finally, she looked up.
"They're yours, Ethan."
The words hit me like a freight train.
For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
My voice barely worked.
Claire closed her eyes.
"The twins are yours."
My mother gasped beside me.
I stared at the two babies again.
Suddenly I saw it.
The boy's eyes.
The shape of the girl's chin.
Even the tiny crease beside her nose.
Pieces of me.
Pieces of Claire.
Pieces of a life we once planned together.
"Why?" I whispered. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Pain flashed across her face.
"I tried."
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean you tried?"
Claire slowly reached into her worn handbag and pulled out an old envelope.
It looked weathered.
Handled many times.
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside were copies of letters.
Dozens of them.
Letters addressed to me.
Every one unopened.
My stomach twisted.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Claire's.
"I sent them after the divorce," she said quietly.
"I called too."
"I emailed."
"I even came to your office twice."
Confusion exploded inside me.
"I never got any of these."
A strange look crossed my mother's face.
The color drained from her cheeks.
Slowly, I turned toward her.
"Mom?"
She looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
My chest tightened.
"Mom... what did you do?"
Tears suddenly appeared in her eyes.
"Ethan, I thought I was protecting you."
The world seemed to tilt.
My mother began shaking.
"I knew Claire was pregnant."
Claire lowered her head.
"And I knew she wanted to tell you."
The air left my lungs.
"What?"
"I intercepted the letters."
The words sounded unreal.
"I told your assistant not to pass along any messages from her."
My hands clenched.
"You what?"
My mother started crying.
"You were finally building your company. You were finally successful. You and Claire were always struggling. Always arguing."
She looked toward the twins.
"I thought those babies would destroy everything you'd worked for."
For a moment nobody spoke.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
An entire year.
A year stolen.
First words.
First smiles.
First milestones.
Gone.
Because someone else decided I shouldn't be a father.
Claire stood.
"We should go."
"No."
The answer came immediately.
She froze.
I looked at the twins.
Then back at her.
"No. You're not leaving."
One of the babies began to stir.
Claire picked her up gently.
The little girl blinked awake.
Then stared directly at me.
Her tiny hand reached into the air.
Toward me.
Something inside my chest broke.
And healed at the same time.
"Please," I whispered.
"Let me hold her."
Claire hesitated.
Then slowly placed the baby into my arms.
The moment I held my daughter, everything changed.
Every business deal.
Every investment.
Every achievement.
None of it mattered.
Not compared to this.
Not compared to them.

Tears blurred my vision.
And for the first time in years, Claire cried too.
