Part 2: The Secret Inside the Frosting

The doctor closed the examination room door behind him.

My brother Ryan stood up immediately. "What's going on? Why did you tell the nurse to call 911?"

The doctor placed my X-ray on the light board.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I saw it.

Tiny metallic shapes were scattered throughout the image.

"What is that?" my mother whispered.

The doctor's voice was calm but tense.

"Those appear to be fragments of metal embedded in the cake."

The room went silent.

My stomach dropped.

"You mean..." Ryan began.

"I mean this wasn't simply a cake-smashing accident," the doctor said. "Miss Carter has several small lacerations inside her mouth and throat. If she had swallowed more of these fragments, the injuries could have been much worse."

A police officer arrived within twenty minutes.

They collected samples of the frosting still stuck to my clothes and took photographs of my injuries. My father's wrist was confirmed broken. My mother's shoulder had been dislocated when she fell.

The officer asked the question nobody wanted to hear.

"Who made the cake?"

Ryan looked sick.

"Megan."

The officer wrote something down.

"Did she purchase it or bake it herself?"

"She baked it."

The room became very quiet.

That evening police officers visited my parents' house. They recovered what remained of the cake from the kitchen trash.

The laboratory results arrived three days later.

The cake contained dozens of small metal shavings.

Not decorations.

Not baking mistakes.

Actual metal fragments.

When detectives questioned Megan, she laughed.

At first.

She claimed it was an accident caused by a damaged mixer.

Then investigators discovered something strange.

The mixer wasn't damaged.

In fact, it hadn't been used at all.

Security footage from a hardware store showed Megan purchasing metal-cutting supplies two days before the party.

The evidence was overwhelming.

For the first time since the accident, Megan stopped laughing.

She asked for a lawyer.

Ryan sat beside me when he heard the news.

His face looked older than I had ever seen it.

"I don't understand," he said quietly. "Why would she do this?"

I knew the answer before anyone else did.

Megan had always hated being the center of attention for only a few minutes.

My brother's promotion celebration wasn't about her.

She wanted a scene.

She wanted everyone talking about her.

What she never expected was that her reckless need for attention would become a criminal investigation.

And she certainly never expected what detectives uncovered next.

Because the metal fragments weren't the only secret hidden inside that cake.
