Part 3 — The Family I Chose Over My Name

Adrian received the call at 2:17 a.m.

"Maya and the children are gone."

His heart stopped.

"What do you mean gone?"

"The apartment's empty."

He drove there in less than eight minutes.

The front door hung open.

Furniture was overturned.

One tiny pink sneaker lay in the hallway.

Emma's.

Rage unlike anything he had ever known flooded through him.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Rage.

Because he knew exactly who had done it.

Salvatore.

The old man didn't even deny it.

"They're safe."

"For now."

"You'll marry Camille."

"You'll inherit the organization."

"And you'll forget the woman."

Adrian stared at the grandfather who had raised him.

"No."

"You don't have a choice."

"I do."

He reached into his jacket.

Not for a gun.

For a folder.

Inside were hundreds of pages.

Bank records.

Secret accounts.

Witness statements.

Evidence Adrian had quietly collected for years.

Insurance.

"If Maya and those children aren't home within one hour..."

He slid the folder onto the desk.

"...every federal agency in America receives copies."

Salvatore finally looked uncertain.

"You'd destroy everything?"

"No."

Adrian answered calmly.

"You already did."

Forty-seven minutes later...

A black SUV stopped outside Maya's apartment.

The doors opened.

Emma jumped out first.

"Daddy!"

It was the first time she had ever called him that.

Adrian caught all three children in his arms.

Maya collapsed beside them, crying into his shoulder.

"We're okay."

"We're all okay."

For the first time in years...

He believed it.

Within months, the impossible happened.

Salvatore was arrested after decades of avoiding justice.

The Vale criminal empire collapsed.

Adrian voluntarily testified against every remaining member.

He walked away from billions.

From power.

From fear.

He kept only one thing worth saving.

His family.

Six months later...

Camille married someone who actually loved her.

She later admitted she had always known Adrian's heart belonged somewhere else.

"I hope you finally find peace," she told him.

"I think I already have."

One year later...

Grant Park looked exactly the same.

Children laughed.

Dogs chased frisbees.

Street musicians played beside the fountain.

This time Adrian wasn't wearing an expensive suit.

He wore jeans covered in finger paint.

Emma rode on his shoulders.

Noah held his hand.

Eli proudly carried a homemade kite.

Maya walked beside him.

"No secrets?"

She smiled.

"No secrets."

"No running?"

"Never again."

He stopped beneath the same tree where everything had changed.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Not with a five-carat diamond chosen by powerful families.

But with a simple ring Maya herself would have picked years ago.

"This time..."

His voice trembled.

"...I'm asking because we're finally free."

Tears filled her eyes.

"You took long enough."

She laughed.

"Is that a yes?"

She kissed him before answering.

"Forever."

The children erupted into cheers.

"Daddy's getting married!"

Emma shouted loud enough for half the park to hear.

Adrian laughed as he looked at the family surrounding him.

For years he had believed his greatest inheritance was the Vale name.

He had been wrong.

His greatest inheritance had been waiting in a stroller all along—

May you like

Three little hearts...

That had never stopped belonging to him.
