Chapter 5 - The Corporate Fallout

The formal service of process hit Ryan like a thunderbolt on Tuesday morning. Not only was he handed divorce papers demanding maximum concessions, but a courtesy copy of the video file—alongside a formal notification of intent to submit it to corporate HR for violations of moral turpitude—was delivered directly to the senior managing partners at Harrison & Sterling Accounting.
By Tuesday afternoon, my phone was ringing incessantly with blocked numbers and panicked voicemails from Ryan’s colleagues and extended family members who had suddenly been dragged into the vortex of his mess.
I ignored every single one of them.
Instead, I took Emma out for an ice cream afternoon date, celebrating what we dubbed "New Beginnings Day." We laughed, shared a massive sundae loaded with hot fudge and sprinkles, and walked through the park as the afternoon sun filtered through the green canopy of oak trees. For the first time in years, I felt entirely in control of my own destiny. No walking on eggshells, no waiting around for a dishonest husband to return from a fake emergency, no second-guessing my worth.
Wednesday morning brought a sudden request for an emergency mediation session from Ryan’s high-priced legal counsel. Sarah called me bright and early, sounding thoroughly amused.
"Well, Megan, it appears the corporate notice worked absolute wonders," Sarah chuckled over the phone. "Ryan’s managing partners called an urgent ethics review meeting yesterday afternoon. They made it very clear to him that an explosive messy divorce involving documented deception and infidelity would severely jeopardize his partnership track and company reputation."
"So he’s willing to settle on our terms?" I asked, leaning back in my kitchen chair.
"He’s willing to give you virtually everything you asked for," Sarah confirmed. "Full primary custody of Emma, the marital home transferred entirely into your name free and clear of mortgage encumbrances, maximized child support, structured spousal maintenance, and a strict moral clause barring Vanessa or any other unauthorized partners from interacting with Emma for at least two years."
"What about Carol?" I asked, narrowing my eyes. "Is there any provision regarding her?"
"We included a mandatory restraining clause preventing her from contacting Emma or coming within five hundred yards of your residence," Sarah replied smoothly. "Ryan tried to object, but his corporate defense team basically told him to sign it or lose his job on the spot. He chose his career over his mother’s temper tantrums."
"Let's schedule the signing for Friday morning," I said. "I want this signed, sealed, and stamped by a judge before the weekend."
Thursday passed in a blur of paperwork, financial audits, and quiet preparations. I spent the evening packing up the remaining boxes of Ryan’s clothes and personal belongings that had been left in the guest closet, dumping them all into cheap plastic storage bins and leaving them lined up neatly by the garage side door with a bright neon sign reading: COLLECT YOUR TRASH.

True to form, Ryan showed up late Thursday night under the cover of darkness. Through the security camera feed, I watched him miserably load the plastic bins into the trunk of his sedan. He looked up toward my bedroom window just once, his face illuminated by the amber glow of the streetlamp, before getting into his car and driving away into the rainy night.
He had lost his home, his reputation, his family, and his dignity—all because he thought he could outsmart the woman who loved him unconditionally.
