Chapter 10 - Sunshine After the Storm
Six months later, the autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of amber and gold, painting our neighborhood in warm, beautiful hues. Life had taken on a rhythm of quiet joy and absolute stability.
Lily had just turned six, and we had thrown her the biggest, most colorful birthday party imaginable in our backyard. Arthur, Brenda, and a handful of her school friends were running around playing games while the smell of barbecue drifted through the crisp afternoon air. There was no shadow of the past, no lingering fear—just pure, unadulterated childhood happiness.
I stood by the patio grill flipping burgers, watching Lily laugh as she blew out the candles on her princess-themed birthday cake. Her smile was radiant, lighting up the entire yard.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a work email, but instead, it was a notification from a secure folder where I kept all our legal documents safely archived.
I opened it just to glance over the final decree. Sole legal and physical custody. Permanent restraining orders fully in place. The chapter was closed, sealed, and locked away forever.
"Dad! Come on, cut the cake with me!" Lily called out, running over and tugging insistently on the hem of my apron, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Coming, birthday girl!" I laughed, setting the spatula down and scooping her up into my arms as she giggled.
As I held her tight, spinning her around in a circle before setting her down by the cake table, I looked around our yard, taking in the bright autumn sun, the laughter of good friends, and the absolute peace of our home.
