Chapter 10 - A Christmas Remembered

One year later, the snow fell softly over Old Town Alexandria once again, blanketing the cobblestone streets in a quiet, pristine white.

Inside our brownstone, the Christmas tree reached all the way to the vaulted ceiling of the living room, glittering with handmade ornaments, twinkling lights, and a silver star at the very top that Julian—now walking on unsteady toddler legs—insisted on pointing at every two minutes.

I sat on the living room rug, building a wooden toy train set while Julian cheered loudly every time I clicked two tracks together. From the kitchen, the rich, buttery scent of roasting turkey and cinnamon drifted through the air, mingling with the soft hum of holiday jazz playing on the record player.

The front door opened, letting in a brief gust of crisp winter air, followed by the sound of Maren shaking the snow off her boots.

"Daddy! Mama!" a small, joyful voice rang out as Julian abandoned his train tracks and waddled as fast as his chubby legs could carry him toward the hallway.

I looked up just as Maren walked in, her arms full of grocery bags, her cheeks flushed pink from the cold. Before she could drop her bags, Julian wrapped his arms around her knees, babbling excitedly about the "choo-choo."

Maren laughed, setting the bags down on the floor and scooping him up into her arms, pressing a loud kiss against his cheek. She looked across the room at me, her eyes shining with love and warmth that felt infinitely richer than any luxury penthouse skyline.

"Merry Christmas, Mr. CEO," she said softly as I walked over, wrapping my arms around both of them, pulling my wife and my son into a tight, unbreakable embrace.

"Merry Christmas, my love," I whispered, burying my face in Julian's soft curls while holding the only family that ever truly mattered. "I finally have everything I'll ever need."
