Chapter 10 - Beyond the Walls

The fallout from the final cartel attempt was swift and absolute. Within a week, the remaining syndicates across the eastern seaboard realized that the Pellagrini empire was untouchable, anchored not just by fear and power, but by an unbreakable, unified core.
Anthony made good on his promise to reshape his world. Over the next six months, he systematically dismantled the darker, illicit branches of his syndicate, transitioning his vast capital into legitimate global real estate, technology investments, and philanthropic foundations. The fortress-like estate remained grand and secure, but the heavy, oppressive aura of danger was entirely gone. The iron gates were left unlocked during the day, and the endless patrols of armed guards were replaced by peaceful gardeners and laughing staff.
Luca grew into a bright, confident, remarkably happy little boy, running through the grand hallways without a shadow of fear, and calling me 'Mom' with a natural, unconditional love that melted my heart every single day.
And Anthony... the terrifying, unreachable mafia boss who had once ruled his world from the shadows had learned how to step into the light.
It was a warm, golden Sunday afternoon exactly one year after the day I had first pulled Luca from the deep end of the pool.
The water in the pool shimmered bright blue under the afternoon sun, calm and sparkling. I was sitting on the edge of the stone patio, reading a book, when a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.
Anthony rested his chin on my shoulder, his dark eyes gazing out over the water where Luca was happily splashing around with a floating toy boat under the watchful, relaxed eye of a single guard.
"Penny for your thoughts," Anthony murmured softly, pressing a lingering kiss to the side of my neck.
I leaned back against him, turning my head to smile up at him. "I was just thinking about how crazy it is that a year ago, I was just a maid cleaning windows upstairs, wishing for a way out of my life."
Anthony’s expression softened, his dark eyes filling with a deep, profound tenderness. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box, flipping it open to reveal a stunning diamond ring that caught the sunlight like liquid fire.
"You weren't trapped here, Elena," Anthony said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "You were coming home. You just didn't know it yet."
He slid off the patio bench, dropping smoothly to one knee right there beside the pool—the exact same spot where he had looked into my eyes months ago and told me I was never leaving.
"I never want you to leave, Elena," Anthony whispered, his voice steady, absolute, and filled with a lifetime of devotion. "Marry me. Let's make this family complete, forever."
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but a wide, radiant smile broke across my face. I reached down, taking his face in my hands, and pulled him up into a deep, passionate kiss before whispering the only answer that mattered.
May you like
"Yes."
Across the pool, Luca let out a loud, joyful cheer, splashing water in the air as he ran over to us, throwing his small arms around both of our legs. Anthony and I laughed, pulling the little boy into a tight, shared embrace under the golden afternoon sun. The shadows of our past were gone, replaced by a bright, beautiful future built on the ruins of our old lives—a true happily ever after, exactly where we belonged.
