Chapter 7 - The Unseen Connection

I stared down at the spinning brass cylinder inside the music box, the delicate notes echoing softly against the cold iron bars of the front gate.

“It was my wife’s favorite,” I answered, my voice tight with disbelief and rising suspicion. “She used to hum it to the twins every night. It’s a private melody—something she learned from her mother. No one outside our immediate family should know it.”

Emma’s face went pale in the glow of the security lights. She stepped closer, her gaze fixed on the intricate carvings adorning the wooden box.

“May I?” she asked softly, extending a trembling hand.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second, then handed the music box to her. She cradled it in her palms like something fragile and sacred, her fingers tracing the interlocking vines carved into the lid.

“My mother had one just like this,” Emma whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “Before she passed away, she gave it to my older sister. But... but our family never knew anyone in Texas. We grew up in Boston.”

The words hung in the crisp night air, connecting invisible dots in my mind with terrifying speed.

“Boston,” I repeated, my breath catching. “Emma... what was your mother’s maiden name?”

“Sinclair,” she replied, looking up at me, confusion and realization crashing together in her eyes. “Elena Sinclair.”

My knees nearly buckled. Elena Sinclair. My late wife’s maiden name was Elena Sinclair.

For a long, disorienting moment, the world seemed to stop spinning. The chilling corporate threats from Victor Vance, the mysterious package, the guards standing around us—everything faded into the background.

Emma wasn't just a random nanny hired through an agency. She was my late wife’s younger sister—my sister-in-law, whom our family had lost contact with years before the twins were born due to a bitter family feud over inheritance and distance.

“Emma,” I breathed, stepping forward and grabbing her shoulders gently. “Elena was your sister?”

A single tear spilled over Emma’s lashes and tracked down her cheek. She nodded slowly. “When she moved to Texas and married you, our stubborn father cut ties with her. I was too young to understand back then. After she passed away... I wanted to find my nephews. I wanted to see the family she had built. That’s why I applied for this job using my middle name, hiding who I was because I was terrified you’d turn me away just like your other nannies.”

The puzzle pieces clicked into place with absolute clarity. The reason the twins never cried around her. The reason she possessed such fierce, natural maternal love for them. The reason she understood the wounded soul of our home better than anyone else.

She wasn't an intruder or a spy. She was blood.

Yet, a terrifying thought instantly pierced through my emotional revelation: If Emma was Elena’s sister, how did Victor Vance—a convicted criminal seeking vengeance against me—know about the music box? How did he connect Emma to our household?
