Part 8: A New Sanctuary

The arrival of Aunt Margaret and Uncle Thomas breathed a completely new, vibrant kind of life into our small household.

Unlike my parents, who viewed family members as assets to be managed and controlled, Margaret and Thomas viewed family as a sanctuary of laughter, support, and shared memories. Within a few months, they had become a permanent fixture in our lives. They attended Lily’s middle school track meets, cheered her on during her piano recitals, and spent lazy summer weekends barbecuing in our backyard.

Lily adored them. She finally understood what true grandparents were supposed to be like—warm, funny, and deeply interested in her thoughts rather than treating her like a chess piece in a legal game.
