Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Empire

The aftermath of Christmas brunch sent shockwaves through the extended family. Within forty-eight hours, Lorraine’s phone calls went completely unanswered by Travis. She attempted to launch a smear campaign, dialing every relative from Ohio to Florida, claiming that her ungrateful son was throwing his elderly mother onto the street for a "cheap child's whim."
However, the truth travels quickly when the receipts are undeniable.
My sister-in-law, Karen—who had always been Lorraine’s favorite and quiet enabler—called Travis three days after Christmas, furious. "How could you do this to Mom? She’s sixty-eight! You’re letting a little girl rule your life and ruin this family!"
Travis didn't raise his voice. Instead, he forwarded a single email chain to the entire family mailing list.
The email thread contained years of documentation: every mortgage payment Travis had covered, the bank statements showing he paid for Lorraine’s luxury cruises, and a transcript of texts where Lorraine explicitly threatened to write Zia out of non-existent trust funds while demanding Travis double her monthly allowance.
Most damning of all was a short video clip recorded by Travis’s cousin at Thanksgiving two years prior. It caught Lorraine covertly taking a slice of pie out of Zia’s hands and giving it to Karen’s son, whispering, "Real grandchildren eat first."

When the rest of the family saw the evidence, the tide turned overnight. Lorraine’s performative matriarchy dissolved. Relatives who had looked the other way out of habit or fear finally realized how deep her cruelty ran. Karen went silent on social media, and the aunt who had watched Zia weep on Christmas Eve sent a large box of custom leather-bound art books directly to our house, addressed specifically to "Zia Miller—Our Dearest Niece."
Lorraine was isolated, trapped inside the very house she had taken for granted, facing the reality that her hold over the family was officially broken.
