Chapter 4 - The Arrival of Victoria Vance

I froze on the sidewalk, my muscles tensing to run. My eyes darted toward the campus security kiosk fifty yards away.

"I don't know who you are," I said, my voice sharp. "If you step out of that car, I'll scream."

The dome light of the SUV clicked on, illuminating the woman in the back seat. She was immaculately dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair streaked with silver and pulled back into a flawless chignon. Her features were striking—sharp cheekbones, a commanding jawline, and eyes of an intense, piercing blue.

But it wasn't her elegance that made my breath catch in my throat.

It was her face.

I had looked at myself in the mirror every morning for eighteen years. I knew the exact curve of my nose, the specific shape of my brow, and the rare, deep blue color of my irises. The woman sitting in the SUV looked like an older, wealthier, more formidable version of the girl staring back at her from the pavement.

"My name is Victoria Vance," she said, her voice softening slightly as she saw my reaction. "I am the chief executive officer of Vance International Shipping. And if the documents my investigators retrieved from a clinic in Chicago are correct... I am your biological mother."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. "My mother is Diane Mercer. She's currently trying to have me arrested."

"Diane Mercer is a thief who bought a baby from a corrupt surrogacy and adoption agency that went bankrupt twelve years ago," Victoria said, stepping out of the car. She carried a thick, leather-bound folder. "For eighteen years, I was told my daughter died in the incubator at a private hospital in Cook County. Three weeks ago, a federal investigation into that hospital's historical records revealed that several infants deemed 'deceased' were actually sold to wealthy families who wanted to avoid public adoption processes."

She took a step closer, her eyes shining with a mixture of profound grief and explosive rage. "Your father's sudden legal trouble in Highland Park flagged your name in the national database. When I saw your photograph in the confidential police files, I knew. I didn't need a lab. But I have one anyway."

She opened the folder, revealing an official medical document from the Genomics Research Institute of New York. Attached to it was a sterile cotton swab inside a plastic vial.

"I need a cheek swab, Emily," Victoria said, her hands trembling slightly—the only sign of weakness from a woman who commanded a multi-billion-dollar global empire. "If the DNA matches, I am going to dismantle Richard and Diane Mercer piece by piece. They will not have a dollar left to their name, and they will spend the rest of their miserable lives behind bars."

I looked at the swab. I looked at the face that mirrored my own.

For years, I had wondered why Diane hated me so intensely while idolizing Tyler. Tyler had Richard’s broad shoulders and dull eyes. I looked nothing like them. I had been treated like a stray dog that had wandered into their mansion, a mistake to be hidden away on a balcony.

"Why me?" I whispered. "Why did they buy me if they hated me?"

"Because Diane Mercer wanted a perfect daughter to show off to the North Shore society," Victoria said, her voice dripping with venom for the woman who had stolen her child. "But when you didn't look like her, and when your intellect began to outshine her biological son, she couldn't handle it. Her narcissism turned into cruelty."

I stepped toward the vehicle. I took the cotton swab from Victoria's hand.

Five minutes later, the SUV was speeding down the West Side Highway toward a private laboratory in Manhattan. Victoria sat next to me, not touching me—respecting the visible boundary of a girl who had been abused for a decade—but her presence felt like a shield of solid iron.

"The test will take twenty-four hours," Victoria said, looking out the window as the city lights blurred past. "In the meantime, my legal team has filed an emergency injunction in the Illinois circuit court. Your father’s fraudulent theft report is being dropped by the state prosecutor tomorrow morning. They realize they've been handled by a criminal."

"What happens to Tyler?" I asked, thinking of my brother’s smug face as he told me I would be doing his laundry at his fraternity.

Victoria turned her head, a cold, terrifying smile touching her lips. "Your brother's graduation from North Valley Business College is scheduled for next weekend, isn't it? A grand celebration at the Drake Hotel in Chicago?"

"Yes. My parents spent fifty thousand dollars on the ballroom."

"Excellent," Victoria whispered. "I believe I shall attend. And I intend to bring the United States Marshals Service as my guests."
