Chapter 8 - The Plaza Gala Under the First Snow

Spring bled into a vibrant, blooming summer, and the crisp air of autumn quickly transitioned into the biting winds of late November.

Almost a year to the day since our fateful meeting in the diner, I stood in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, wearing an emerald-green silk gown that hugged my curves, watching the glittering lights of the annual Vance Foundation Charity Gala.

The room was packed with city officials, philanthropists, and business leaders—all the people who used to ignore women like me when we stood shivering on street corners. Now, they were lining up to shake my hand, praising the new emergency family initiative that had successfully housed over five thousand displaced individuals across the city in the past ten months.

I slipped away from the crowd, stepping out onto a quiet balcony overlooking Central Park, where the trees were dusted with the first light snow of the season.

A familiar warmth settled over my shoulders as a heavy cashmere overcoat was draped gently around me. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Julian stepped up beside me, leaning against the stone balustrade. He looked sharp in a tailored black tuxedo, but the rigid, guarded posture he used to carry was completely gone. His eyes were bright, filled with a deep, abiding peace.

"You're hiding," he murmured, a teasing smile playing on his lips.

"I'm escaping," I corrected, resting my hands on the cold stone. "Being the guest of honor is exhausting work. I much prefer auditing spreadsheets."

Julian laughed softly, turning to face me. The ambient glow of the city lights reflected in his dark eyes. "You know, exactly one year ago tonight, I was the loneliest man on earth sitting in a diner drinking burnt coffee."

"And I was a broke mother with six dollars and fifty cents and a broken heart," I replied softly.

Julian reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face. His touch lingered on my cheek, sending a familiar, electric thrill racing through my veins.

"You changed everything, Elena," he said, his voice dropping an octave, thick with a raw, undeniable emotion. "You didn't just fix my foundation. You fixed my life. You brought light back into this dark, empty world of mine."

My breath caught in my throat. "You saved us, Julian."

"We saved each other," he corrected gently.
