Chapter 9 - A NEW HORIZON

As Sophia entered her teenage years, her brilliance and independence blossomed into something truly remarkable.

At age fourteen, she qualified for the state’s advanced science and technology Olympiad, showcasing an exceptional talent for digital security systems and forensic auditing—skills she had subconsciously absorbed while helping Vincent review the old financial ledgers from her mother’s case years ago.

One warm Saturday afternoon, Vincent and Sophia sat together in the private courtyard behind the restaurant. Tall ivy climbed the brick walls, and the scent of blooming jasmine filled the air.

Sophia was tapping rapidly on a sleek laptop screen, analyzing code for a cybersecurity scholarship application, while Vincent sat nearby reading a historical biography.

“Uncle Vincent,” Sophia said without looking up from her screen, a teasing smile playing on her lips. “Agent Lin called the restaurant today.”

Vincent looked up over his reading glasses, raising an eyebrow. “Is that so? Did she mention if the federal cyber-crimes division is still looking for top-tier consultants right out of high school?”

“She said they’re keeping a very close eye on me,” Sophia laughed, turning the laptop around to show him a congratulatory email from the Department of Justice’s junior cyber-defense initiative. “She also said that if I ever decide to pursue federal law enforcement, I’ll have the best recommendations in the country—provided I promise never to hack into secure municipal mainframes just to prove a point.”

Vincent chuckled, shaking his head. “Good advice. Though I taught you better than to leave digital footprints when you hack municipal mainframes.”

Sophia grinned mischievously. “I learned from the best, boss.”

Vincent’s expression softened into an expression of profound paternal pride. He looked at the young woman sitting across from him—intelligent, brave, fiercely independent, and completely safe. Every lingering ghost from that rainy night ten years ago had finally been put to rest. Her mother’s legacy lived on not through hidden secrets or dangerous evidence, but through a brilliant young mind dedicated to uncovering truth and protecting the innocent.

“Your mother would be so proud of you, Soph,” Vincent said softly, his voice filled with deep emotion.

Sophia’s smile softened into something tender. She reached across the table and placed her hand over his calloused knuckles. “She would be proud of us, Uncle Vincent. We saved each other.”
