Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Two weeks passed inside the fortress of the Sterling Estate, a sanctuary where time seemed to slow down. My physical wounds began to heal; the deep purple bruises along my jaw faded to a faint yellowish hue, and a temporary cosmetic bridge was fitted by a top-tier dental surgeon, restoring my smile while we waited for the permanent implant.
Lily thrived in the sprawling gardens, chasing peacocks across the lawn and laughing with the army of devoted staff who treated her like royalty.
Meanwhile, Brandon’s world was collapsing in real-time.
My father kept me informed of the legal proceedings, though he shielded me from the ugliest details. Brandon’s embezzlement scheme had completely unraveled. The firm he worked for had not only fired him on the spot but had also pressed full criminal charges when the audit revealed he had stolen over four hundred thousand dollars over three years.
Furthermore, because his corporate and personal bank accounts were frozen by court order under civil asset forfeiture initiated by my father’s legal team, Brandon couldn't even afford a private defense attorney. He was forced to rely on a public defender who was handling a dozen other felony cases simultaneously.
On a crisp Tuesday morning, sitting in the sunroom overlooking the estate’s private lake, my phone—a brand-new secure smartphone provided by my father—lit up with an unknown number.
I stared at it for a long moment before swiping to answer.
"Rachel?"
The voice was ragged, desperate, and small. It sounded nothing like the arrogant, booming tyrant who had terrorized our home. It was Brandon.
"How did you get this number?" I asked calmly, my voice steady and devoid of fear.
"It doesn't matter," Brandon choked out, a sound like a sob catching in his throat. "Please, Rach. You have to call your dad off. They're going to put me away for ten years. The police raided my apartment—they threw me out, Rachel! I'm living out of my car, and my car is about to be repossessed. I have nothing. Absolutely nothing."
I listened to his pleading, feeling a strange sense of detachment. The man on the other end of the line no longer held any power over me. The monster who had broken my tooth and threatened my child had been reduced to a pathetic, cornered coward.
"You did this to yourself, Brandon," I said evenly. "You chose anger. You chose violence. You chose to steal and lie."
"I was stressed!" he screamed, his old temper flashing for a microsecond before he caught himself and whimpered, "I'm sorry. I'll get help, Rachel. I swear to God, I'll go to rehab, I'll take anger management. Just... please tell your father to drop the charges. Let's fix our family. For Lily."
"Don't you ever say my daughter's name," I replied, my voice hardening like steel. "You lost the right to be a father the moment you raised your hand against me while I was carrying our child. You will never see Lily again. And you will pay for every single thing you've done."
"Rachel, wait! Don't hang up—"
I tapped the red end call button, blocking the number instantly.
I set the phone down on the glass table, took a deep breath of the autumn air, and looked out across the shimmering lake.
My phone buzzed again a second later—not a call, but a news alert from a local Dallas financial network.
