Chapter 6 - The Cornered Predator

The arrest of Mark Dawson did not happen quietly in a corporate office, as his lawyers had hoped. It happened in the lobby of the very hospital where he had tried to execute his plan.
It was nearly 8:00 p.m. when the alarm was raised. Mark, using an old employee keycard from his firm’s legal representation days, had bypassed the main security desk and taken the service elevator to the fourth floor. He had bypasses the guard at the front of the postpartum wing by wearing a stolen lab coat he’d snatched from the doctors’ lounge.
I was at the nurse’s station, reviewing discharge charts, when I saw a figure in a white coat walking down the hallway toward Room 418. The coat was too short, the stride too hurried, too aggressive for any of our attending physicians.
“Mark!” I yelled, jumping up from my desk.
The figure stopped, turning around. It was him. Without the polished suit, wearing the wrinkled lab coat over his blue shirt, he looked desperate, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild.
“Stay back, Rachel,” he warned, pointing a finger at me. “I am here to see my daughter, and I am taking her home. You have no legal right to keep her from me.”
“The police have a warrant for your arrest, Mark!” I shouted, stepping between him and Claire’s door. “Don’t make this worse than it already is!”
“Worse?” he laughed, a harsh, dry sound that echoed off the sterile walls. “You’ve ruined my life! You’ve destroyed my reputation! My firm is already asking questions. All because of a stupid administrative mistake!”
“It wasn't a mistake, Mark,” Claire’s voice came from behind me.
She had opened her door. She was standing in the doorway, holding the IV pole for support, but her posture was upright. She was wearing her own clothes now—a simple pair of jeans and a dark sweater—looking like a woman ready to face the world.
“Claire,” Mark said, his voice instantly shifting into that pleading, manipulative tone. “Sweetheart, they’re lying to you. They’re trying to tear us apart. You know I love you. Everything I did, I did for us. For our family.”
“You sterilized me without my consent, Mark,” Claire said, her voice shaking but resolute. “You violated my body. You treated me like an object you owned. You didn't do it for us. You did it to control me.”
“You were out of your mind with pain!” he yelled, stepping toward her, his face contorting in rage. “You couldn't make a decision! I had to make it for you! I’m your husband!”
“That doesn't give you the right!” Claire screamed back, her voice echoing down the corridor. “I am a human being! I am not your property!”
At that moment, the heavy double doors of the postpartum unit burst open. Officer Henderson and two Chicago police officers charged down the hallway, their weapons drawn but kept low.
“Mark Dawson! Hands where I can see them!” one of the officers ordered.
Mark spun around, looking like a trapped animal. For a second, I thought he might try to fight, to run, to use his size and legal knowledge to bluff his way out. But as he looked at the three officers, the security guard, Sarah, and finally at Claire, who was looking at him with nothing but cold disgust, the fight went out of him.
He slowly raised his hands, the stolen lab coat slipping from his shoulders to the floor.
“This is a mistake,” he muttered, his voice cracking as the officers pushed him against the wall and clicked the metal handcuffs around his wrists. “My lawyers will have this thrown out by morning. Claire, tell them! Tell them you consented!”
Claire didn't answer. She stood in the doorway of Room 418, her arm wrapped tightly around her abdomen where the incision still throbbed, and watched as her husband was led away in chains.
As the elevator doors closed on Mark, Claire let out a long, shuddering breath. She didn't collapse. She didn't cry. She just turned to me, a small, tired smile on her face.

“It’s over, Rachel,” she whispered.
“No, Claire,” I said, walking over to wrap my arm around her shoulders. “It’s not over. It’s just the beginning of your real life.”
