Chapter 5 - The Fall of Marcus Vale

Daniel burst through the doorway like a storm, followed closely by three real hospital security officers and two Portland police officers with drawn weapons.

Daniel didn't even look at Marcus; his eyes swept the room, instantly taking in the blood on the floor, my crumpled form, and Lily standing pale against the wall.

"Get him!" one of the police officers yelled.

Marcus tried to scramble toward the radiator to retrieve his weapon, but the two officers tackled him simultaneously, slamming him facedown into the vinyl floor. The sound of his breath being forced out was loud and harsh.

"Marcus Vale, you are under arrest!" the officer shouted, pinning his arms behind his back with swift, practiced movements. The metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

Marcus thrashed, screaming curses, his face pressed against the floorboards. "She stole my child! She's my daughter! You can't do this to me!"

"Shut up," the officer snapped, hauling Marcus to his feet. Marcus's nose was broken from the door impact, blood streaming down his beard, but his eyes were still locked on me with pure malice.

"You haven't won, Rachel," Marcus spat as the officers dragged him toward the door. "I'll be back. I'll always find you!"

"No, you won't," Daniel said, stepping into Marcus's path. Daniel was breathing heavily, his coat torn, his knuckles bruised. He looked Marcus directly in the eye with a cold, absolute certainty. "You're going to federal prison for kidnapping, assault, and weapons charges. You will never see my family again."

The police dragged Marcus out, his shouting fading down the corridor until it was swallowed by the distance.

The moment Marcus was gone, the room collapsed into controlled chaos. Medical staff flooded the area. Two doctors dropped to their knees beside Nurse Sarah, who was beginning to stir, while a trauma team rushed to my side.

"We need a gurney here now!" a nurse called out. "She's hemorrhaging! Get her to operating room three!"

"Rachel!" Daniel was beside me on his knees, taking my face in his shaking hands. "Rachel, look at me. Stay with me."

"Lily..." I rasped, my vision fading to black around the edges. "Noah..."

"They're safe," Daniel sobbed, pressing his forehead against mine. "Look at them. They're right here."

I forced my eyes open one last time. Lily was standing beside Daniel, holding Noah's clear bassinet with both hands, watching me with tears spilling over her cheeks. She was safe. My baby was safe.

"Good girl, Lily," I whispered.

Then the darkness swept in and swallowed me whole.
