Chapter 8 - A Feast of Gratitude

By Sunday evening, the autumn chill began to settle over the neighborhood, prompting us to move the festivities indoors. To celebrate Lucas's return properly, we decided on a full family dinner—featuring every single one of his favorite childhood dishes, cooked together in our warm, bustling kitchen.
The kitchen counter was soon crowded with bowls of garlic mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, a massive tray of golden-brown roasted chicken, and, of course, a towering stack of homemade pancakes that Maya had insisted counted as an official dinner side dish.
"If anyone touches the chicken before we take a proper family photo, I am launching a tactical strike," Maya announced, standing guard by the oven mitts like a miniature military sentinel.
"Nobody dares cross Commander Maya," Lucas laughed, holding his hands up in mock surrender as he washed his vegetables at the sink.
When everything was finally laid out on the dining table, the room looked wonderfully chaotic and inviting. The candles in the center of the table flickered warmly, casting dancing shadows against the walls.
Before we sat down, David cleared his throat softly and raised his water glass.
We all paused, looking toward him.
"I just want to say," David began, his voice steady but thick with emotion, "that for the past eighteen months, sitting at this table always felt a little too quiet. There was always one chair too empty, one plate too few. But tonight... tonight, our family is complete again."
He looked across the table at Lucas, whose expression softened into a quiet, profound warmth.
"Welcome home, son. We are so damn proud of you. And thank you for coming back to us safe and sound."
"To Lucas," I added, raising my glass with tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. "Our hero, our heart, and our home."
"To Lucas!" Maya echoed cheerfully, clinking her glass of apple juice against ours with enough enthusiasm to splash half of it onto the tablecloth.

We all laughed, and as we dug into the feast, the conversation flowed with the effortless, comforting rhythm that only true family can share. We talked about silly childhood memories, upcoming holiday plans, and the simple joys of having everyone under the same roof once more.
For the first time in eighteen months, the lingering shadow of uncertainty was entirely gone. In its place stood the warm, unshakeable certainty of our love for one another.
