Chapter 4 - The Family Backlash

"Clara Elizabeth Vance! Have you completely lost your mind?!"
My mother’s screech tore through the speaker, so loud I had to pull the phone three inches away from my ear. In the background, I could hear my father shouting something about ungrateful children and ruining lives.
"Hello, Mother," I said, my voice dropping into an icy, measured cadence that left no room for negotiation. "I'm doing well, thank you for asking. And you?"
"Don't give me your smart-aleck attitude!" my mother shrieked, her voice cracking with furious disbelief. "The police department just called your father because some rookie cop claims Madison abandoned her kids at your house! And now there's a court summons waiting in her mailbox for a civil lawsuit? Are you trying to put your own sister in prison?!"
"Madison committed felony child abandonment and criminal trespass," I replied evenly, sipping my coffee. "She broke into my home using a stolen, duplicated key while I was working. She destroyed thousands of dollars worth of professional property, let her children ruin my walls, and drove away without a backward glance."
"She is pregnant!" my father bellowed, snatching the phone from my mother. His deep, booming voice was designed to intimidate me into submission, the exact trick he had used since I was seven years old. "She has hormones raging, her husband is out at sea protecting this country, and she is under immense stress! That is what family is for! You have a big house, Clara! You have no husband, no children, no responsibilities! Why couldn't you just watch them for a few weeks?!"
"Because my house is not a state-funded orphanage, Dad," I snapped back, the quiet anger finally giving way to a sharp, burning edge. "And my life is not Madison's personal dumping ground. If she couldn't handle six kids, she shouldn't have had a seventh on the way. She broke the law. Now she gets to deal with the legal consequences."
"She is your sister!" my mother wailed in the background, having grabbed the phone back. "Families stick together through thick and thin! If you don't drop these charges right this second, don't ever expect us to speak to you again! We will cut you out of this family completely!"
I let out a cold, humorless laugh.
"Cut me out?" I echoed. "Mother, what exactly am I losing? Every holiday consists of me cooking for twelve people while Madison sits on the couch complaining about her feet, and you two tell me I need to find a nice man to settle down with. You haven't supported me once in my entire life. You've only ever used me as an unpaid assistant."
"You selfish, cold-hearted witch!" my mother sobbed dramatically. "Enjoy your empty house! When you die alone with your computer, remember you did this to yourself!"
Click.
The line went dead.
I lowered the phone slowly, staring at the blank screen. My chest felt tight, but underneath the residual adrenaline, there was a vast, beautiful expanse of relief. The threat they thought was a weapon—cutting me out—felt like the greatest gift they could have ever given me.

I placed the phone face down on the counter, walked over to my pristine walnut dining table, and sat down in the exact spot where Madison had left her arrogant little note.
My house was quiet. My walls were defaced, yes, but they were mine. And the battle had only just begun.
