Chapter 4 - The Second Miracle

The operating room was filled with over twenty medical professionals. Because this was a high-risk delivery of premature triplets following a delayed interval, three separate neonatal resuscitation teams were stationed around three warming stations.
"We are preparing for a vaginal delivery if possible, but the surgical team is ready for an emergency C-section if fetal distress occurs," Dr. Foster announced to the team.
Andrew stood by my head, clad in full blue scrubs, holding my hand with a grip so tight my fingers went numb.
"You can do this, Elena," he whispered. "Faith is waiting for them."
At 24 weeks and 1 conveyable day, the contractions took over with undeniable force.
"Oliver is coming first," Dr. Foster announced. "Push, Elena! Give me everything you have!"
I gathered every ounce of strength left in my exhausted body and pushed. The pressure was immense, accompanied by a sharp, tearing sensation.
At 11:14 AM, Oliver was born.
He weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces. Unlike Faith, who had been completely silent, Oliver gave a tiny, high-pitched squeak—a faint meep sound—before his air passage was secured by the waiting resuscitation team.
"We have breath sounds!" a neonatologist called out. "Moving Oliver to warmer one."
"Don't stop, Elena," Dr. Foster instructed, her hands steady. "Sophie's sac has broken. Next contraction!"
Two minutes later, at 11:16 AM, Sophie entered the world. She was the lightest of the four, weighing just 1 pound, 1 ounce. Her skin was translucent, her eyelids still fused shut, but her heart rate was strong.
"Sophie is stable, intubated, starting surfactant therapy," the second neonatal team reported.
Now, only Mia remained.
My uterine contractions suddenly stalled. On the monitor, Mia's heart rate began to dip—110, 95, 80.
"Mia is in breech position and showing deceleration," Dr. Foster warned. "We don't have time to wait for another natural contraction. Elena, I need you to push right now, with or without a contraction!"
"I can't... I have no energy left..." I sobbed, lightheaded and exhausted.
Andrew leaned down, his forehead touching mine. "Elena, look at me. Mia needs you. One last push for our baby girl. Do it for Mia!"
I closed my eyes, screamed through my gritted teeth, and pushed with every fiber of my soul.
At 11:21 AM, Mia was born. 1 pound, 4 ounces.
The room erupted into controlled chaos as the third medical team wrapped Mia in protective warming film and inserted an endotracheal tube.
Within twenty minutes, all three babies had been stabilized, placed in transport incubators, and wheeled out toward the NICU to join their big sister Faith.
Dr. Foster delivered the remaining placentas and spent the next hour repairing my injuries and ensuring there was no postpartum hemorrhage. When the room finally cleared, Andrew and I were left in the quiet chamber.
