Chapter 4 - A Husband’s Shield

Three days after my meeting with the JAG officer, I was folding laundry in the living room while Lily napped. The constant stream of texts had ceased after Captain Thomas sent the official cease-and-desist letters via certified mail, but the silence felt like the tense quiet before a mortar attack.
Suddenly, I heard the sound of a key turning in the lock of the front door.
My heart leaped into my throat. I stood up, grabbing the heavy wooden rolling pin from the kitchen counter, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Had Diane hired someone? Had she found a way in?
The door swung open.
A tall man in dusty OCPs (Operational Camouflage Pattern) stepped inside, carrying a large duffel bag. His face was weathered from days in the field, his eyes exhausted, but the moment he saw me, his expression softened into pure, unadulterated devotion.
"Jake," I whispered, the rolling pin slipping from my fingers onto the carpet.
He dropped his duffel bag with a heavy thud, took three long strides across the room, and pulled me into his arms. He smelled of sweat, dust, pine trees, and the familiar, comforting scent that was uniquely him. He held me so tightly I could feel the rapid beating of his heart.
"I’m here," he murmured into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry it took me so long. I'm here now, Emily."
"How?" I gasped, burying my face in his chest. "Your training—"
"My commander cleared it," Jake said, pulling back slightly to look at my face, his hands gently cradling my cheeks. "Once the JAG office filed the official harassment report and the police got involved, my leadership classified it as a family emergency. They gave me emergency leave. I drove straight through the night."
He looked past me toward the hallway. "Where is she? Where's our daughter?"
"She's sleeping," I smiled through my tears.
Jake walked quietly down the hall and stood over the bassinet. He was a broad-shouldered, hardened soldier, but as he looked down at Lily, he seemed to shrink with reverence. He gently reached down and let her tiny hand wrap around his massive index finger. A single tear slipped down his cheek.
"She’s perfect, Em," he whispered. "She’s absolutely perfect."
"She is," I agreed, wrapping my arm around his waist.
We stood there for a long time, just watching our daughter breathe. It was the first time since her birth that I felt a complete, unbroken sense of peace.
Later that evening, after Jake had showered and eaten, we sat at the kitchen table. The binder of evidence sat between us. Jake’s eyes turned to cold steel as he read through the messages from my mother and sister.
"They threatened to take Lily," he said, his voice dangerously quiet. "They threatened your career."
"They did," I said. "But I didn't let them win, Jake. I didn't send a single dollar."
"I am so incredibly proud of you," Jake said, reaching across the table to squeeze my hands. "For years, you've carried the burden of their greed because you felt like you had to. But you stood up to them. You protected our daughter."
"I had to," I said. "I looked at her, and I realized... if I keep letting them drain us, what kind of life am I giving her? She would grow up seeing her mother being abused and exploited. I won't let that be her normal."
May you like
"It won't be," Jake promised. "Tomorrow, we’re going to the courthouse. We’re filing for a temporary restraining order against your mother and Sophie. And I’m going to make sure the base security is notified. If either of them steps foot near this installation, they’ll be arrested."
He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto mine. "We are a unit, Emily. You, me, and Lily. Nobody—and I mean nobody—disrupts our peace."
