Part 2 – The Poison in the Nursery

Adrian didn't sleep that night.
He sat beside Noah's hospital-style bed with a flashlight, watching every rise and fall of his son's tiny chest. Nia slept curled beside Mara on the couch, clutching the maid's apron as if it were the safest place in the world.
Outside the nursery, the mansion remained eerily quiet.
Too quiet.
At exactly 2:17 a.m., Adrian's head of security, Ethan Brooks, knocked softly.
"Sir."
Adrian stepped into the hallway.
"What did you find?"
Ethan handed him a sealed evidence bag.
"The kitchen staff didn't know this existed."
Inside was a small bottle with no label.
"The laboratory completed an emergency analysis," Ethan continued. "It's a customized sedative. Small doses every day. Enough to suppress muscle development, slow speech, and keep children weak without killing them."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"For how long?"
"The chemist estimates... at least three years."
Three years.
Three birthdays.
Three Christmas mornings.
Three years of believing his children would never call him father.
His fists clenched until his knuckles turned white.
"Who handled their meals?"
Ethan swallowed.
"Only one person had unrestricted access."
Adrian already knew the answer.
"Celeste."
Morning arrived.
The family gathered around the enormous breakfast table.
Celeste smiled elegantly.
Victor poured himself coffee.
Neither noticed Adrian quietly replacing every security guard with men loyal only to him.
The twins were absent.
"So," Victor said casually, "have you dismissed the maid yet?"
"No."
Celeste sighed dramatically.
"Adrian, you're letting an employee manipulate your grief."
He looked at his wife.
"Tell me something."
She smiled.
"Anything."
"Why did you lie about Noah's blood tests?"
Her smile disappeared.
"I... don't know what you mean."
Adrian slid a thick medical file across the table.
"I asked Ethan to retrieve the original reports from the laboratory."
Victor stopped stirring his coffee.
"The reports I signed..."
He opened the folder.
"...were forged."
Silence.
Celeste laughed nervously.
"Surely you're joking."
Adrian turned another page.
"The original neurologist concluded the twins would recover with therapy."
Another page.
"The second specialist recommended stopping all medication."
Another page.
"Neither recommendation reached me."
Victor stood abruptly.
"This is ridiculous."
Adrian's voice became frighteningly calm.
"I also discovered someone paid both doctors to disappear."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"You have no proof."
"I do."
Ethan entered the dining room carrying a tablet.
He pressed Play.
Security footage filled the screen.
It showed Victor entering the nursery kitchen every evening.
Mixing something into two tiny bowls.
Then leaving.
The room fell silent.
Celeste's face turned pale.
Victor slowly smiled.
"So you finally know."
Adrian stared at his younger brother.
"Why?"
Victor leaned back.
"Because weak children create a weak father."
He laughed.
"You stopped attending board meetings."
"You handed me control."
"You trusted me with the company."
"And it worked."
Celeste closed her eyes.
"Victor..."
He ignored her.
"I never wanted them dead."
He shrugged.
"I just needed them helpless."
Adrian felt something inside him snap.
Without warning, he slammed Victor against the dining room wall.
The crystal chandelier shook.
"You stole my children."
Victor grinned through the pain.
"You handed them to me."
Before Adrian could strike again, Ethan separated them.
"Sir."
Adrian slowly stepped back.
His voice was ice.
"Lock every gate."
"No one leaves this estate."
An hour later, Mara carefully fed Noah fresh oatmeal she had prepared herself.
For the first time in years, Noah lifted the spoon with trembling fingers.
He missed his mouth.
The oatmeal landed on his shirt.
Everyone froze.
Then Noah laughed.
A tiny, raspy laugh.
Nia giggled too.
Mara cried openly.
Adrian dropped to his knees beside them.
"My brave boy..."
Noah looked into his father's eyes.
His lips struggled.
"D...Dad."
The single word shattered three years of silence.
Adrian hugged both children while tears streamed down his face.

Outside the nursery, Celeste heard everything.
And she realized there was no lie left big enough to save her.
