Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary We Built

The sun was setting behind the western hills, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, magenta, and gold as we drove back home.

The radio played a soft, upbeat acoustic melody, the kind that makes you want to roll the windows down and let the evening breeze tangle your hair. Lily hummed along from the passenger seat, tapping her fingers rhythmically against her knee.

When we pulled into our driveway, the house was waiting for us—warm light glowing from the front porch, the white picket fence standing strong and clean against the gathering twilight, the garden we had planted together blooming brightly by the front steps.

It wasn't a mansion built on social status, toxic pride, and hidden violence.

It was something infinitely better. It was a home built on truth, safety, laughter, and unconditional love.

We stepped out of the car, walking side by side up the wooden steps. I unlocked the front door and pushed it open, letting the welcoming warmth of our sanctuary wrap around us like a familiar embrace.

Lily dropped her school bag by the entryway, turned around with a bright, luminous smile, and threw her arms around my waist, burying her face in my shoulder.

I wrapped my arms tightly around her, resting my chin against her hair, breathing in the scent of shampoo and evening air.

“Home sweet home,” she whispered against my sweater.

“Home sweet home, baby,” I replied, looking out past the open doorway into the quiet, peaceful night where our future stretched out endlessly before us, bright and entirely our own.
