Chapter 10 - The Warmth That Stays

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and rose.
We had friends coming over later that evening—real friends, neighbors from down the hall, and my father, who was visiting us for his first normal, relaxed dinner with his granddaughter without walking on eggshells. The apartment was alive with the kind of chaotic, beautiful energy that only a true home possesses.
I stood on the balcony for a moment, holding a warm cup of coffee, feeling the gentle summer wind brush against my face. The contrast between this moment and the freezing, desolate apartment I had walked into six months ago on New Year's Eve was staggering.
That night had marked the end of an illusion—the moment the cold truth forced us to tear down the walls my mother had built around our lives. But out of the wreckage, we had built something far stronger: a home rooted in trust, transparency, and unconditional love.
Julia stepped out onto the balcony behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head gently against my back.
“What are you smiling at?” she murmured, looking out at the city lights blinking on across the neighborhood.
I turned around in her embrace, pulling her close against my chest, and kissed the top of her head.
May you like
“Just making sure the heat is on,” I whispered, smiling down at her.
Julia laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that chased away any remaining shadows of the past. “Always,” she said, resting her hand over my heart. “Always.”
