Chapter 9 - Reclamation

My legs felt like lead as I took my first steps toward her.

The girl looked at me, her brown eyes—the exact shape and shade of my own—widening with a mixture of wonder, confusion, and recognition.

"Maren?" the adoptive mother asked softly, her eyes filled with tears of deep empathy. "I'm Sarah. This is my husband, David. And this... this is Lena."

"Hello, Sarah," I choked out, wiping a tear from my cheek before kneeling down so I was at eye level with the young girl. "Hello, Lena."

Lena stared at me, looking down at her own reflection in my face. "You... you're my real mother?" she asked quietly.

"I am the woman who carried you and loved you from the very first second," I said gently, keeping a respectful distance to not overwhelm her. "And I spent eleven years searching for you."

Lena looked back at Sarah and David, who both gave her an encouraging nod, tears rolling down their faces. They had spent the last three months working with child psychologists and family courts to prepare for this day, agreeing to open guardianship so Lena would never have to choose between the family that raised her and the mother who was stolen from her.

Lena took a step forward and set her violin case down on the pavement. She pulled a folded piece of paper from her coat pocket and handed it to me.

Unfolding it, I saw a drawing of a tiny baby wearing pink socks with tiny white clouds, drawn in colored pencils.

"Dr. Vale told us what you did for little Ivy," Lena said, her voice soft yet brave. "She said you were a hero."

"I’m just your mom," I sobbed, closing the distance and gently pulling her into a warm, long-overdue embrace.

For the first time in eleven years, the weight in my chest vanished. I squeezed her tight, smelling the sweet scent of rain and sweet flowers in her hair, safe in the knowledge that she was finally back in my life.
