Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Courtyard

The rain had lessened to a steady, bitter drizzle by the time we reached the ground-level exit of the west courtyard, but the cold wind whipped through the stone archways like a razor blade. Viktor had managed to secure the main foyer, eliminating two more of Strakov's operatives near the grand staircase, but the primary tactical unit had already retreated to the outer perimeter, dragging little Sofia with them as a human shield.

We burst through the heavy wrought-iron side doors into the courtyard just as the tail-lights of a sleek black armored SUV began to pull away from the gravel driveway toward the main security gates.

"They're heading for the north access road," Viktor reported over a secure radio handset, blood staining the shoulder of his tactical vest. "The perimeter gate is locked down, but Strakov has the override codes. If that vehicle hits the highway, we'll lose them in the city grid."

Nikolai didn't hesitate. He strode over to a black sedan parked near the courtyard fountain, wrenched the driver's side door open, and tossed the keys to Viktor.

"Get in," Nikolai ordered, looking directly at me.

"I'm coming," I said, my voice leaving no room for argument. I climbed into the passenger seat before he could even object, clutching Sofia's tiny hearing aid so tightly in my palm that the plastic edges dug painfully into my skin.

Viktor slammed his foot down on the accelerator, and the sedan leaped forward with a deafening roar of tires on gravel, tearing out of the courtyard and onto the winding estate road in pursuit of the fleeing SUV.

The chase through the rain-slicked forest road was terrifying. The black SUV ahead fishtailed dangerously around the sharp curves, its tires throwing up sprays of mud and water. Viktor pushed our sedan to its absolute limits, closing the gap meter by meter, until our front bumper was barely ten feet away from their rear doors.

"Ram them!" Nikolai commanded calmly from the back seat, his Beretta resting casually across his knee.

"Hold on!" Viktor shouted.

With a bone-jarring crash, our sedan slammed directly into the rear quarter-panel of the armored SUV. The impact sent a shower of sparks flying into the dark night air, forcing the SUV to violently swerve and spin out across the wet asphalt, finally crashing hard against a massive stone retaining wall just fifty yards short of the main highway gates.

Before the smoke had even cleared, Nikolai was out of the car, his weapon raised, moving toward the wrecked SUV with terrifying speed and composure. Viktor and I followed closely behind.

The driver's side door of the SUV was jammed, but the rear passenger door was hanging open. Stepping through the wreckage was a scarred, heavy-set man in tactical gear—Yuri Strakov, Nikolai’s former chief enabler and the mastermind behind the poisoning and the raid. And right in front of him, held tightly in his grip with a heavy combat knife pressed lightly against her small throat, was Sofia.

My daughter's eyes were wide with sheer terror, her little hands trembling as she clutched the missing ear of her stuffed elephant. She couldn't hear the shouting, couldn't hear the engines, but she could feel the cold steel against her skin.

"Drop the gun, Nikolai!" Strakov screamed, spattering blood from a split lip, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Drop it or I swear to God I'll slit the brat's throat right now! You're finished, Drazen! The board owns the docks, the police are twenty minutes out, and you're bleeding out from the inside!"

Nikolai stopped ten feet away. He didn't drop his weapon. Instead, he raised it with absolute, unshakeable calm, aiming directly between Strakov's eyes.

"You made one critical mistake, Yuri," Nikolai said, his voice cutting through the hiss of the rain like a razor.

"And what's that?!" Strakov yelled, pressing the knife slightly closer to Sofia's skin, drawing a tiny droplet of crimson.

My heart stopped. I screamed out, paralyzed with terror.

"You thought I was alone," Nikolai replied coldly.

Before Strakov could react, a deafening crack echoed from the tree line above us. Viktor’s sniper rifle barked once. The bullet caught Strakov squarely in the right shoulder, instantly shattering bone and forcing him to drop the knife with a shrieking curse.

May you like

Nikolai lunged forward with the speed of a striking viper, sweeping Strakov's legs out from under him and driving the butt of his Beretta hard against the traitor's jaw, rendering him unconscious in a single, brutal blow.

I didn't wait for a second. I rushed past Nikolai, scooped Sofia up into my arms, and buried my face in her curly hair, sobbing uncontrollably as she wrapped her tiny arms around my neck, clinging to me with all her might.
