Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Empire

Three months had passed since the trial. The media storm had finally begun to fade, replaced by new headlines and forgotten scandals. For me and Leo, life had taken on a new, beautiful rhythm of peace and purpose.

Sitting in my corner office on the top floor of Sterling Tower, I looked out over the glittering skyline of the city. The entire building had undergone a massive restructuring. As the newly reinstated CEO and sole majority shareholder of Sterling Global Enterprises, I had purged the toxic corporate culture Mark had tried to cultivate and replaced it with a leadership team built on integrity, transparency, and ruthless efficiency.

The door to my office clicked open, and Vance stepped inside, holding a thick stack of finalized documents.

"Ma'am," Vance said with a slight, approving smile. "The acquisition of the remaining tech assets from the Apex bankruptcy auction has been finalized. Our engineering division has already integrated their proprietary server architecture into our main infrastructure."

"Excellent," I replied, spinning my executive pen between my fingers. "How are the former employees who were wrongfully laid off by Mark doing?"

"We offered reinstatement contracts to every single engineer and developer who had nothing to do with Mark and Sarah's fraudulent schemes," Vance reported proudly. "Morale is through the roof, and our stock value has risen twenty-two percent since the restructuring."

I smiled, standing up and walking over to the window. "Good. People deserve to work in an environment where hard work is rewarded, not exploited by narcissists looking for a shortcut."

Just then, the private office door swung open with a cheerful, high-pitched giggle.

"Mama!"

Leo toddled into the room, his small legs moving as fast as they could, steadying himself on the edge of my oversized desk. He was wearing a little blue sweater, his bright eyes wide and full of wonder. Behind him, our trusted family nanny smiled warmly, closing the door softly behind her.

I instantly dropped the corporate persona, my heart melting into warm puddles. I knelt down, sweeping my arms wide.

"Hey, my little man!" I scooped Leo up into my arms, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek as he giggled uncontrollably, clutching my lapels with his tiny hands.

Vance chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, I'll leave the CEO of Sterling Global to negotiate with her most important stakeholder."

"Thank you, Vance," I laughed, carrying Leo back to my massive leather desk and setting him down on my lap as he curiously poked at my keyboard.

Looking down at my son, I realized how much had changed in such a short amount of time. I had entered that birthday party three months ago believing I was trapped in a life where my worth was dictated by an ungrateful husband. I had walked out holding my son, realizing that I didn't just belong to an empire—I was the empire.

My phone on the desk lit up with a secure notification from Victor: “Final settlement paperwork regarding your formal divorce and full, unhindered sole custody of Leo has been signed by the family court judge. It’s official. You are completely free.”

I tapped the screen, archiving the message into a folder labeled Closed.

Leo cooed, grabbing a blank piece of paper and scribbling a clumsy crayon line across it with a red marker.

"That's right, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing the top of his soft brown hair as the afternoon sun poured through the glass windows, bathing our future in brilliant, golden light. "We write our own story from here on out."
