Chapter 7 - Tissue of Proof

At 7:45 AM the next morning, my phone rang.

My hand shook so violently I nearly dropped the phone on the kitchen floor before answering it.

"Hello? Dr. Thorne?"

"Natalie," Dr. Thorne's voice came through the speaker. He sounded exhausted, but beneath the fatigue, there was an unmistakable note of scientific triumph. "I need you to come to the university lab immediately. Bring your attorney."

Thirty minutes later, Susan Vance and I walked into Dr. Thorne’s laboratory.

The room was filled with computer monitors displaying complex, color-coded genetic sequences—long, repeating strands of letters representing millions of base pairs of DNA.

Dr. Thorne stood in front of a massive comparative screen. He held a thick paper report stamped with the official seal of the State University Department of Human Genetics.

"Look at this," Dr. Thorne said, pointing a laser pointer at the top monitor.

"This is Genomic Profile A," he explained. "Extracted from your blood, your cheek cells, and your hair follicles. It represents the primary individual known as Natalie Voss."

He shifted the laser pointer to the lower screen.

"This is Genomic Profile B," he continued. "Extracted from your children's maternal genetic samples."

Then, he moved the laser pointer to a third chart displayed in the center.

"And this... is the DNA profile extracted from your cervical scrapings and deep endometrial tissue biopsy taken yesterday afternoon."

I leaned closer, my breath catching in my chest.

The lines, the color-coded spikes, the numeric loci—they were an exact, flawless mirror image of the middle profile.

"It is a 100% maternal match," Dr. Thorne declared, turning to face Susan Vance. "The tissue that formed her reproductive organs—her cervix, her uterus, and her ovaries—contains a completely different genomic identity than the tissue that formed her skin and blood. Natalie Voss is a confirmed tetragametic chimera."

Susan Vance stared at the screens, her mouth slightly open. The skeptical defense attorney was gone, replaced by a woman realizing she was holding a legal bombshell.

"The cheek swabs taken by the county witness in the delivery room were taken from her mouth," Susan said slowly, processing the legal implications. "Which carries Profile A."

"Precisely," Dr. Thorne said. "The county tested her cheek cells and compared them to a child created from her ovarian cells. It was scientifically impossible for those two samples to match. The county was testing two completely different people who happen to inhabit the exact same physical body."

"Will you testify in court today?" I asked, tears of overwhelming relief threatening to spill from my eyes. "Will you bring this report to Judge Miller?"

May you like

Dr. Thorne grabbed his lab coat and a thick binder of forensic documentation.

"Mrs. Voss," Dr. Thorne said with a faint smile, "I have lived forty years as a geneticist waiting for a case of this magnitude. Not only will I testify, but I will also inform the county prosecutor that if they continue to pursue fraud charges against you, they will become the laughingstock of the international medical community."
