Chapter 4 - The Breach

The heavy, authoritative pounding on the front door shook the frame of the house, rattling the decorative plates hanging in the hallway.

“State Police! Open the door!” a deep, commanding voice boomed through the solid oak.

Julian stood paralyzed in the center of the kitchen, his hands trembling at his sides. The polished, confident facade he had worn all afternoon had completely disintegrated, leaving behind the jittery, cornered coward he had always been underneath.

“Julian, open the door!” Chloe shrieked, grabbing the front of his shirt and shaking him. “Do something! Tell them it’s a family misunderstanding! Tell them she’s senile!”

“Shut up! Just shut up!” Julian snarled, shoving her away. He turned wild, desperate eyes toward me. “Elena, please—we’re family! You can’t do this to us. We’ll give the money back! We’ll sign whatever papers you want! Just tell them it was a joke, a mistake!”

I didn't blink. I didn't offer a single word of comfort or negotiation. I simply reached into my pocket, pulled out my official Department of Justice badge, and flipped it open under the kitchen lights, letting the gold shield and my holographic state credentials gleam in front of his face.

“Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance,” I said clearly, every syllable cutting through the silence of the room. “You’re about twenty minutes too late to negotiate, Julian.”

The second round of pounding was accompanied by the metallic click of a heavy ram being positioned against the exterior frame.

“Last warning! Open the door or we breach!”

“Don't!” Julian screamed toward the hallway, finally lunging forward to throw the deadbolt just as the door began to shudder under an outside blow.

The heavy oak door swung wide open, crashing against the interior wall. Three state troopers in tactical vests, led by a towering sergeant with a severe military haircut, flooded into the hallway, flashlights sweeping across the floor and ceiling.

“Clear!” the lead sergeant barked, his eyes instantly locking onto Julian and Chloe, who stood frozen with their hands half-raised in the air.

“Assistant Attorney General Vance,” I called out, stepping out from the kitchen into the hallway and raising my badge high so the lead officer could see it immediately. “I initiated this call. Case number AG-2026-8841. Elder abuse in progress, aggravated financial fraud, and unlawful restraint.”

The sergeant immediately lowered his weapon slightly, nodding sharply. “Yes, ma’am. Judge Thorne transmitted the ex parte warrant to our mobile terminal three minutes ago. Where is the victim?”

“Upstairs, master bedroom hallway, second door on the right,” I replied crisply. “She is medically fragile, suffering from acute trauma, severe malnutrition, and physical ligature injuries. Have the accompanying EMTs go straight up with a stretcher. Do not let anyone else enter that room.”

“Understood! Miller, Davis, get upstairs with the medical kit!” the sergeant shouted over his shoulder. Two troopers broke away from the entry team and bolted up the wooden staircase three steps at a time.

Julian’s knees finally buckled. He dropped heavily onto the carpeted floor of the hallway, burying his face in his hands as a low, pathetic whimper escaped his throat. “No… no, please… we took care of her… we loved her…”

Chloe, however, possessed no such resignation. As two troopers stepped forward to secure her wrists with plastic zip-ties, she shrieked at the top of her lungs, thrashing violently against them.

“Get your hands off me! You don’t know who you’re dealing with! This is our house! Elena, you lying, manipulative bitch, you’re destroying this family over money!” she screamed, her face contorted in an ugly, venomous snarl as the cuffs ratcheted tight around her wrists.

“You’re right, Chloe,” I said coldly, walking past her toward the stairs as the EMTs wheeled my mother down wrapped in a warm thermal blanket, her eyes wide with wonder and safety as she looked down at me. “I am protecting my family. But not the parts of it that rot.”
