Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm Gathers

The next morning, I woke up early. I looked at the bed next to mine, where Sarah and Jamie were still fast asleep. Under the warm, clean sheets of the luxury hotel, they looked safe, but the dark circles under Sarah's eyes and the rib cage visible beneath Jamie’s oversized hotel pajama top were constant, painful reminders of the truth.

I quietly got out of bed, walked to the hotel desk, and opened my laptop.

First, I logged into my banking app. For five years, I had been sending $1,800 a month to an account I thought was a joint account between my mother and Sarah. What I found made my blood run cold.

The account had been completely drained. There was less than $40 left in it.

I looked at the transaction history. There were hundreds of charges at high-end boutiques, luxury spas, five-star restaurants, and car dealerships. Gertrude and Prudence had spent every single cent I sent on themselves. They had even leased a brand-new Mercedes-Benz under my name using a forged power of attorney.

They hadn't just neglected my family; they had systematically stolen from me while leaving my wife and child to starve.

My hands shook with rage, but I forced myself to stay calm. Anger wouldn't save my family; action would.

I picked up the phone and called a number I had saved years ago.

"Marcus," I said when the call went through. "It's David. I need the most ruthless family and financial lawyer in the state. And I need him today."

Marcus, an old high school friend who now ran a successful corporate firm, didn't hesitate. "I know exactly who you need. His name is Arthur Vance. He’s a shark. What’s going on, David?"

"My family," I said, my voice tight. "They tried to destroy my wife and son while I was away. I want them to lose everything."

"I'll have Arthur call you in ten minutes," Marcus said.

By 10:00 AM, I was sitting in a private conference room in a high-rise downtown, opposite Arthur Vance. He was a sharp-dressed man in his fifties with cold, calculating eyes.

I laid out the entire story. I showed him the bank statements, the forged power of attorney, the photos I had taken of the filthy back kitchen before we left, and the medical reports from the pediatrician I had taken Jamie to see that morning. The doctor had confirmed Jamie was severely malnourished and suffered from developmental delays due to lack of proper food.

Arthur Vance listened in silence, his expression hardening with every word I spoke. When I finished, he closed his notebook and looked at me.

"David, what your mother and sister did isn't just cruel; it is highly illegal," Arthur said, his voice dripping with professional malice. "We are looking at financial fraud, identity theft, forgery, and criminal child neglect. We can freeze all the accounts immediately. We can revoke the power of attorney, demand an accounting of every dollar spent, and initiate immediate eviction proceedings from the mansion."

"How long will the eviction take?" I asked.

"Normally, it takes thirty to sixty days," Arthur said, a cold smile playing on his lips. "But since the house is entirely in your name, and we have clear evidence of elder/child abuse and criminal activity occurring on the premises, I can file for an emergency restraining order. We can have them out of that house by the end of the week."

May you like

"Do it," I said. "Do it all. I want them to feel exactly what they made my wife and son feel."

"Consider it done," Arthur replied. "I'll file the paperwork within the hour. By this afternoon, their world is going to start crumbling."
