Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

BANG!

The gunshot deafened the room, shattering the thick glass window behind me into a million cascading crystal shards. The high-altitude wind rushed into the office, blowing papers and dust into a wild hurricane.

I had ducked the instant I saw his finger tighten on the trigger, throwing my weight sideways behind the heavy mahogany desk. The bullet tore through the leather upholstery inches from my shoulder.

Vance lunged forward, his face twisted in psychotic fury, aiming for a second shot. But I didn't give him the chance. Swinging my five-cell steel flashlight with all the momentum in my body, I struck him hard across the wrist.

The gun clattered across the floor, sliding toward the shattered window.

Vance screamed in pain, but he was driven by pure desperation. He tackled me around the waist, throwing us both onto the hard marble floor. For a man in his fifties, he fought with the terrifying strength of a cornered animal. His hands reached for my throat, his fingers digging into my windpipe.

"You... were... nothing!" Vance spat, his eyes bulging as he squeezed the breath out of me. "I... made... you!"

Air rushed out of my lungs. Black spots danced across my vision. I looked past Vance's shoulder at the ceiling, seeing Clara’s face in my mind, remembering her soft laugh, remembering Lily’s small voice whispering in my ear: “Daddy... Uncle Derek scared Mommy...”

A surge of adrenaline hit my veins like raw fire.

I slammed my forehead directly into Vance’s nose. He groaned, his grip loosening as blood erupted from his face. I rolled over, pinning him to the floor, and smashed my fist into his jaw.

Once. For Clara.

Twice. For Lily.

A third time. For the life he had stolen from us.

Vance slumped backward against his desk, battered, bleeding, and gasping for air. The smug, untouchable executive was gone; in his place was a broken, terrified man.

The heavy oak doors of the office were blown off their hinges with a deafening crack.

"FBI! DON'T MOVE!"

A dozen tactical officers in black body armor flooded the room, their assault rifles trained on Vance. Detective Miller rushed in behind them, drawing his sidearm and securing the aluminum briefcase containing the master hard drive.

Miller looked at me as I pulled myself up against the wall, chest heaving, wiping blood from my knuckles.

"You're crazy, Alex," Miller grunted, but there was deep respect in his eyes. "You almost got yourself killed."

"Is it over?" I asked, my voice raspy.

Miller picked up the hard drive and held it up. "This drive has everything. Manifests, offshore accounts, shell company registration, and encrypted communications between Vance, your brother, and corrupt state inspectors. It’s over. He’s never seeing daylight again."

Two federal agents dragged Vance to his feet, slapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. As they paraded him past me, Vance glared at me with pure hatred, blood dripping down his chin onto his ruined silk tie.

"You think you've won?" Vance sneered, choking on his own blood. "Your family is destroyed, Alex. Your mother is going to federal prison. Your brother will rot in a cell. You have nothing left."

I stood tall, looking him dead in the eye.

"I have my daughter," I said quietly. "And I have the truth. You have nothing."

Vance was dragged out, his frantic protests fading down the long hallway.

May you like

I walked over to the broken window, feeling the cool night air rush over my face. Below me, the city lights sparkled like a sea of diamonds. For three days, I had been trapped in a dark, suffocating tunnel of lies, betrayal, and grief. But now, the air felt clean again.

Detective Miller walked up beside me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "Come on, Alex. Let's go home. Someone is waiting for you."
