Chapter 2 - The Neighbor's Witness

Mrs. Kennedy stepped quickly across the manicured lawn separating our houses, her frail hands trembling as she clutched her phone. She was seventy-two years old, a retired schoolteacher who had lived in the neighborhood for decades, and usually, she kept to herself. Today, however, her expression was one of absolute urgency.

"Sawyer," she called out, her voice cracking. "Wait. Please."

I paused at the passenger side of my sedan, carefully shifting Gracie so she wouldn't jar her back. Caroline stood in the doorway of the house, arms crossed, glaring daggers at Mrs. Kennedy.

"We're in a hurry, Helen," Caroline called out sharply, her voice carrying a warning undertone. "Gracie had an accident, and we need to get to the clinic."

Mrs. Kennedy ignored Caroline entirely. She stopped right beside me, looking past my shoulder at little Gracie, who was quietly whimpering. Tears welled up in the old woman's eyes.

"Oh, sweet angel," Mrs. Kennedy whispered, before turning her gaze back to me. "Sawyer, you need to see this. I didn't want to interfere, God knows I didn't, but when I saw you drive up today... I knew I couldn't stay silent any longer."

She unlocked her phone screen with a shaky thumb and tapped a video file.

"What is that?" I asked, my instincts tightening.

"My security camera points directly toward your side kitchen window and the back patio," Mrs. Kennedy explained, her voice dropping to a fierce, protective whisper. "The microphone on that particular camera is very sensitive. Sawyer... this happened two days ago, right after you left for your trip."

She pressed play and handed the screen to me.

The video opened with the bright afternoon sun filtering through our kitchen window. My heart immediately seized as Caroline's voice blasted from the tiny speaker, sharp and venomous.

“I told you twice to clean up those crayons! Are you deaf?”

On the screen, eight-year-old Gracie shrank back against the kitchen counter, holding a box of colored pencils. “I'm sorry, Mom, I was just putting them away—”

Before she could finish, Caroline lunged across the frame. The audio captured a terrifying, violent slap, followed by a sickening thud as Gracie collided with the edge of the kitchen island. The little girl let out a piercing shriek of pain, clutching her lower back and collapsing to the linoleum floor.

Caroline didn't drop to her knees to comfort her daughter. Instead, she stood over her, breathing heavily, and screamed, “Stop your howling! You always do this for attention! If you ruin my evening or tell your father a single word about this, I swear you will never see him again. Do you hear me? You'll destroy this family!”

The video ended with Gracie sobbing silently against the floorboards, pulling her knees up to her chest while Caroline stalked out of the room.

My blood ran completely cold. The world around me seemed to tilt on its axis. Every nerve ending in my body burned with a white-hot fury so intense that I couldn't even speak. I stared at the phone screen, the digital image replaying in my mind over and over again. My sweet, gentle little girl had endured that terror alone in our own home.

From the doorway, Caroline must have realized what was happening. Her face lost all its color.

"Helen, you old busybody, delete that!" Caroline shrieked, abandoning her post and rushing down the front steps. "That's a private matter! You've been spying on us!"

"I'm sending this file to my own phone right now," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a deadly, freezing calm that made Caroline stop dead in her tracks.

I looked at Mrs. Kennedy, my chest heaving. "Thank you, Helen. You just saved my daughter's life."

"Go, Sawyer," Mrs. Kennedy said, patting my arm firmly. "I've already emailed a backup copy to myself. Take that little girl to the doctor, and then take it to the police."

Caroline lunged forward, trying to snatch the phone from my hand, but I stepped back, shielding Gracie with my body.

"Don't you dare touch her again," I snarled at Caroline, the fury finally breaking through my restraint. "We are done. Do you hear me? We are completely done."

I opened the car door, gently strapped Gracie into her booster seat, and got behind the wheel. As I backed out of the driveway, I watched Caroline standing in the middle of the street, screaming obscenities and clutching her head, realizing for the first time that her web of lies had completely fallen apart.
