Part 3: The Labyrinth of Lies

The days that followed were a blur of hospital lights, sterile hallways, and police interrogations. Lily remained in a medically induced coma, her tiny body fighting off the effects of the trauma Nathan had inflicted.

Detective Sarah Jenkins became my shadow. She explained that Nathan had been a person of interest in a series of disappearances across three states, but he was a ghost—no digital footprint, no social media, just a perfectly crafted persona.

"He chose you, Claire," Detective Jenkins said during one of our late-night meetings at the precinct. "He built a life with you to create the perfect camouflage. You were his anchor to reality, and he used that to hide in plain sight."

I spent my nights in the hospital, reading to Lily, whispering promises that I would never let anyone hurt her again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nathan’s casual laugh. I realized he hadn't just 'disciplined' Lily; he had tried to break her spirit because she was the only one who didn't fear him. She had seen something she wasn't supposed to, and he had tried to silence her.

I began to dig into his belongings. I found a hidden compartment in the floorboards of our home office. Inside wasn't money or gold, but a ledger. It was a list of names—names of women and children who had gone missing over the last decade. My name was at the very bottom, underlined in red. I wasn't just his wife; I was his next project.
