Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

The sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden hue across the living room windows.
The party had wound down into a peaceful evening. Our friends had gone home, Claire’s parents had retired to the guest room, and Noah was fast asleep in his crib upstairs, clutching a small stuffed bear with both arms, his breathing soft and even.
Claire and I sat together on the back porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sharing a mug of hot spiced cider as the cool autumn wind rustled the falling leaves in our garden.
"Do you ever think about her?" Claire asked quietly, her voice barely a whisper above the breeze. "Your mother?"
I looked out past the garden fence toward the quiet street.
"Sometimes," I admitted honestly. "Not with anger anymore. Just... with pity. She spent her entire life manipulating people, stealing joy, and building a kingdom out of lies, and in the end, she ended up with nothing. She threw away her family for control, and she died alone in a cell of her own making."
Claire rested her head on my shoulder, her fingers sliding into mine. "We broke the cycle, Ethan."
"We did," I agreed, kissing her forehead. "And we’re never going back."
The road behind us had been dark and treacherous, filled with betrayal, cruelty, and the bitter betrayal of blood. But as I looked at the warm lights glowing from our windows, at the peaceful nursery upstairs, and at the woman who had stood by my side through the fire, I knew one thing with absolute certainty.

Our story didn't end in that damp, freezing kitchen.
That was only where our real life began.
