Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Two months later, the Federal High Court of Mexico City was packed to capacity. Journalists, television crews, land rights activists, and high-society figures crammed into the mahogany-paneled courtroom.

At the defense table sat Jorge Mendoza, flanked by six of the most expensive defense attorneys in the country. He sat upright, immaculate in a bespoke navy suit, maintaining an air of supreme confidence.

Across the aisle sat Valeria, my mother, and me.

Doña Elena sat in a wheelchair, dressed in a simple, elegant dark blue dress. Her hair was neatly pinned back, her skin had regained its healthy glow, and her eyes were bright and focused. Thanks to proper medical care and the restoration of her heart medications, her strength had returned remarkably.

The judge, Justice Carlos Montemayor—a man known for his rigid adherence to the law—struck his gavel. "Court is now in session. The case of Ruiz v. Mendoza Urban Development Corporation."

Mendoza’s lead attorney, a razor-sharp litigator named Bernardo Reyes, stood up immediately.

"Your Honor," Reyes began, his voice booming through the room. "We move for an immediate dismissal of all claims. The plaintiff relies entirely on an unverified, forty-year-old scrap of paper and the dubious testimony of a discredited, mentally unstable relative currently serving time for elder abuse."

"The 'scrap of paper' has been authenticated by the Federal Registry's chief forensic document examiner, Your Honor," Valeria countered smoothly, standing up. "And our evidence goes far beyond the original 1984 title deed."

Valeria turned to the court clerk. "The defense calls for the playback of Evidence Item 44-B—the authenticated audio files retrieved from the cloud server of Karina Mendoza."

Mendoza’s lawyer jumped up. "Objection! Unlawful wiretapping!"

"Overruled," Justice Montemayor declared sternly. "The recording was produced under a valid state prosecutor's warrant in a criminal conspiracy investigation. Play the audio."

The technician pressed a button on the workstation laptop. A clear, crisp voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom.

[Jorge Mendoza's Voice]: "Is the old woman still lucid, Karina?"

[Karina's Voice]: "She has good days and bad days, Uncle. Alejandro bought more pills yesterday."

[Jorge Mendoza's Voice]: "Flush them down the drain. Keep her confused. The neurologist I paid off will sign the dementia papers next week. Once she's declared legally incompetent, you sign the land transfer as her power of attorney. Alejandro will never suspect a thing until the dirt is poured for the new tower foundation."

[Karina's Voice]: "What if Alejandro finds the brass key?"

[Jorge Mendoza's Voice]: "He won't. He's a weak man, just like his father was. If he gets in the way, I'll handle him the same way I handled Mateo back in '84."

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom.

Reporters began typing furiously on their laptops. Several members of the jury stared directly at Jorge Mendoza with looks of unadulterated horror.

Mendoza’s face turned from pale white to a deep, dangerous crimson. He turned to his lead lawyer, whispering frantically, but Reyes simply sat down, pulling his glasses off and rubbing his temples. He knew the fight was lost.

Valeria stepped toward the center of the room, looking directly at the judge.

"Your Honor," she said, her voice resonant and unshakeable. "Jorge Mendoza did not merely steal property. He attempted to erase a family. He stole thirty years of prosperity from Doña Elena Ruiz. He conspired to destroy her body and mind to cover up a murder he committed four decades ago."

Justice Montemayor leaned forward, looking down at Mendoza.

"Mr. Mendoza," the judge said, his voice cold as ice. "Do you or your counsel have any legal defense against these recordings?"

Mendoza opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. The empire he had built on intimidation, bribery, and theft had collapsed in a matter of minutes under the weight of his own recorded voice.
