Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Freedom

Judge Vance didn't even leave the bench to deliberate. She closed the file with a heavy, satisfying thud and looked directly at Carolina.
"Mrs. Hale, in my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen such an egregious, calculated betrayal of a maternal bond," the judge said, her voice dripping with absolute disgust. "You used your husband’s absence to turn your home into a chamber of terror for a helpless child, and your mother acted as your warden, helping you conceal the evidence of your violence."
The judge turned to Sawyer, her expression instantly softening into deep respect. "Mr. Hale, full legal and sole physical custody of Gracie Hale is hereby awarded to you, effective immediately. The parental rights of Carolina Hale are terminated indefinitely. A permanent, lifetime protection order is granted for both Gracie and yourself against Carolina Hale and Bonnie Vance."
The judge struck her gavel once more. "Furthermore, I am recommending to the District Attorney that the charges against Mrs. Hale be elevated to felony child abuse with a hate enhancement for vulnerable victims, and that Bonnie Vance be charged with felony conspiracy and tampering with evidence. This court is adjourned."
Two bailiffs immediately stepped forward, pulling Carolina’s arms behind her back and clicking handcuffs into place. She began to scream, her carefully constructed veneer shattering completely as she was dragged through the side door toward the holding cells.
