Chapter 10 - HAPPILY EVER AFTER
Ten years later, the autumn leaves crunched beneath our boots as we walked down the tree-lined path toward the middle school auditorium.
Lucy was twelve now—tall, bright, fiercely independent, and blessed with a sharp wit and an infectious laugh that could light up any room. She had just been elected vice president of the school debate club, and tonight was her very first major tournament.
"Do you think my speech is too long, Mama?" Lucy asked, nervously adjusting her blazer collar as we stopped outside the double doors of the auditorium.
"It's absolute perfection, sweetie," I said, kneeling slightly to straighten her collar and look into her bright, confident eyes. "Just speak from the heart. Exactly like you always do."
"And remember," Evelyn chimed in, stepping up beside us with a proud grin and handing Lucy a lucky peppermint drop, "if anyone tries to interrupt you, just channel your inner aunt Evelyn and stare them down until they apologize."
Lucy laughed out loud, popping the peppermint into her mouth. "Got it, Auntie Eve."
As the auditorium doors swung open, welcoming in a flood of warm light and excited chatter from parents and teachers, I took a deep breath of the crisp October air.
