Chapter 2 - The Vault is Open

My breath hitched in my throat as I stared at the phone screen. The phrase “that isn’t the worst thing she found” echoed in my mind like a death knell. How could anything be worse than the affair? Vanessa and I had been careful—or so I thought. We used encrypted messaging apps, paid for dinners with a separate corporate card that I had falsely expensed as client relations, and even kept our hotel visits restricted to boutique establishments where discretion was paramount.

Yet, as I drove toward downtown Manhattan, my hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. The Greenwich traffic felt agonizingly slow, every red light stretching like an eternity. My mind raced through every possible secret. Had she found the off-shore account I opened during my previous venture? Had she discovered the text messages from investors discussing the hidden losses in my primary firm? Or worse... had she stumbled upon the loan defaults I had spent the past year desperately burying?

When I burst into my attorney Marcus’s glass-walled office on the forty-fifth floor, he wasn’t alone. Seated across from his polished mahogany desk was a forensic accountant I had occasionally hired for corporate compliance audits—Sarah Vance.

Marcus looked up, his expression a mix of professional pity and profound disappointment. Julian. Sit down, he said, gesturing to the leather chair.

I didn’t sit. I slammed my hands onto the desk. What is this? What else could Claire possibly have? She took my son! We need an emergency injunction to track her phone, to freeze her assets—

Quiet down, Julian, Marcus interrupted sharply, his voice cutting through my panic. You don't have assets to freeze. And as for tracking her phone, a New York judge won't grant you a single minute of relief when they see what your wife’s legal team filed two hours ago.

Sarah Vance spun her laptop around so the screen faced me. On it was a complex financial flowchart mapping out three distinct holding companies, a series of shell corporations registered in Delaware, and a massive web of transactions that traced directly back to my primary business account.

Explain this, Sarah said smoothly, her eyes locking onto mine.

My stomach plummeted into an abyss. Those... those are internal corporate restructurings, I stammered, the lie tasting like ash in my mouth.

Are they? Sarah raised an eyebrow, clicking on a highlighted transaction dated eight months ago—right in the middle of Claire's third trimester. Because according to these wire transfers, you systematically drained four hundred thousand dollars from the family’s primary savings—money earmarked for Noah’s trust and your mortgage—and funneled it into a private account under the pseudonym ‘V. Cole.’

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa Cole. My mistress. Not only had I been spending lavishly on her, but I had used funds tied directly to joint marital assets, unwittingly giving Claire a masterclass in financial infidelity and corporate fraud.

She didn't just stumble upon an affair, Julian, Marcus said softly, taking off his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. Your wife hired a top-tier forensic team weeks before she walked out. She has complete documentation of your embezzlement, your tax evasion via false business expenses, and your adultery. In family court, this isn’t just a messy divorce. This is an open-and-shut case of gross dissipation of marital assets.

I slumped into the leather chair, the fight completely draining out of me. If Claire wanted to destroy me, she already had all the weapons she needed.
