Chapter 10 - A New DawnThe evening sun dipped slowly below the city skyline, casting a warm, golden-amber glow across the expansive rooftop garden of the Sarah Harrison Community Foundation building.
Quiet music drifted softly from the open French doors leading into the rooftop lounge—a gentle piano melody, complex and beautiful, playing the exact notes of the song Sarah had been learning to master on her parlor piano months ago.
Robert stood near the glass railing of the rooftop terrace, resting his hands on the smooth stone ledge as he looked out over the sparkling lights of the downtown waterfront district below. The city was alive—buses humming along clean streets, children laughing in the newly planted neighborhood parks, and the warm, welcoming neon sign of Murphy’s Diner glowing brightly three blocks away.
Footsteps approached softly behind him on the polished stone pavers.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Harrison?”
Robert turned to see Grace walking toward him, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, with Emma skipping along beside her, holding a small sketchbook filled with colored pencil drawings of rocket ships and stars.
Robert smiled warmly, stepping back to let them join him at the railing. “Just reflecting on how fast a single afternoon can change the trajectory of an entire life.”
Emma leaned against the glass railing, pointing a small finger toward the bright evening star beginning to twinkle in the darkening twilight sky.
“Look, Mama! There’s the big star!” Emma announced with absolute, unshakable certainty. “Do you think he’s listening?”
Grace looked up at the evening sky, a soft, serene smile gracing her lips, and gently wrapped her arm around her daughter’s shoulders. “I’m certain he is, sweetheart. I’m certain he’s smiling down at us right now.”
Robert stood beside them, looking up into the vast, beautiful expanse of the evening sky. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out the small pink plastic bracelet with its silver star charm, and slipped it gently onto his wrist right beside his watch, where it caught the evening light and glittered like a tiny beacon of hope.
