Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Bank

Two days later, the Temporary Protection Order was officially granted by a judge and served to Richard at his workplace. The order was clear: he was forbidden from contacting us, coming near us, or meddling in our affairs. However, a cornered predator always looks for another way to strike.
It happened on a Thursday afternoon. Mom had taken me with her to our local bank branch to audit our joint bank accounts and remove Richard’s name from any shared finances. Mom had worked hard all her life, maintaining a personal savings account from before her marriage to Richard, which held the funds my late biological father had left behind for my college education and medical care.
As we sat at the desk of the bank manager, Mr. Harrison, his face grew pale as he typed on his computer keyboard.
"Mrs. Miller... I'm looking at your primary savings and the trust account registered under Leo’s name," Mr. Harrison said, leaning back in his chair. "There was an attempt to transfer the entire balance—over sixty thousand dollars—out of these accounts early this morning."
Mom’s blood ran cold. "What? How? Those accounts require my dual signature!"
"He presented a power of attorney document signed three weeks ago," Mr. Harrison said, showing her the digital scan on his screen. "It designates Richard Miller as your full financial proxy in the event of your 'incapacitation'."
Mom’s hands began to shake, not out of fear, but out of sheer, unadulterated outrage. "I never signed a power of attorney! He forged my signature again!"
"Fortunately," Mr. Harrison continued quickly, "our fraud detection system flagged the transfer because the power of attorney was notarized by a notary public whose license was revoked last year. The funds are frozen, but Mr. Miller is actually in the building right now, downstairs in the commercial lending office, trying to finalize the clearance."
Mom didn't hesitate. She stood up instantly. "Call the police, Mr. Harrison. Tell them a man subject to a active protective order is currently committing bank fraud in your building."
We walked quickly down the carpeted stairs to the lower lobby. There, sitting at a corner desk with a leather briefcase open on his lap, was Richard. He was arguing intensely with a loan officer, slamming his hand lightly on the desk to assert dominance, just like he always did.
"I am her husband!" Richard was shouting softly, trying to keep his voice down while remaining aggressive. "She is mentally unstable and currently experiencing a medical breakdown! I am taking control of the estate for the protection of her child!"
"You are taking control of nothing, Richard!" Mom’s voice shattered the quiet decorum of the bank lobby.
Richard whipped around, his face turning pale when he saw Mom walking toward him, me right behind her. Several bank patrons turned to look.
"Elena! You shouldn't be here," Richard stammered, standing up quickly and trying to close his briefcase. "You're confused. You need to sit down—"
"I am perfectly lucid, you coward," Mom said, her voice carrying across the entire floor. "You tried to steal my son's college fund! You forged my signature on a power of attorney document!"
"I did it for us! To protect our assets from your reckless spending!" Richard yelled, his composure completely shattering under the public gaze. He turned to the loan officer. "Don't listen to her, she's off her medication!"
"I don't take medication, Richard! But my son takes insulin—the insulin you tried to keep from him!" Mom barked.
Right at that moment, the glass front doors of the bank pushed open, and two police officers walked in, responding to Mr. Harrison’s emergency call.
Richard froze. He looked at the officers, then at Mom, then at me. For the first time since I had known him, I saw genuine, naked panic in his eyes. He realized he was surrounded. The police officers, recognizing Richard from the protective order issued forty-eight hours prior, moved in immediately.
"Richard Miller," Officer Vance—who happened to be on duty again—said, drawing his handcuffs. "You are under arrest for violation of a restraining order, attempted grand larceny, and uttering a forged instrument."
"This is a misunderstanding! She's my wife!" Richard screamed as Officer Vance pulled his arms behind his back and snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists. "Elena! Tell them! Tell them we're a family!"
May you like
Mom stood tall, her arms crossed over her chest, watching him with unwavering, calm eyes.
"We were never a family, Richard," she said softly as the officers led him away through the bank doors, past the staring crowds. "You were just a parasite. And today, we pulled you off."
