Part 2 SHE DISAPPEARED TO PROTECT HIM… BUT THE SECRET SHE HAD CARRIED FOR A YEAR LEFT HIM SHATTERED

For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
The autumn wind carried dry leaves across the sidewalk between them, but Rowan barely noticed.
He couldn't take his eyes off the babies.
"They're... yours?" he repeated quietly.
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
His chest tightened.
"I didn't even know you were pregnant."
A painful smile crossed her face.
"I know."
His mother stepped closer, wrapping her coat tighter around herself.
"Clara," Helen said gently. "What happened to you?"
Clara looked away.
"I didn't want any of this."
Rowan felt anger rising again.
"Then explain it."
"You left without a word."
"You ignored every message."
"I thought you stopped loving me."
Clara closed her eyes for a moment before answering.
"No."
"I loved you too much."
That answer only confused him more.
She slowly reached into the worn backpack beside the bench and pulled out a thick envelope.
It was faded and bent at the corners.
"I wrote to you," she whispered.
"Every week."
Rowan frowned.
"I never received anything."
"I know."
She handed him the letters.
Each envelope had his apartment address written in her handwriting.
None had ever been opened.
His hands trembled.
"My father intercepted them."
Rowan looked up sharply.
"What?"
Clara nodded.
"The day after our divorce papers were signed, your father came to see me."
Rowan's face drained of color.
"He told me your construction company had already borrowed millions from his investment group."
"He said if I stayed with you..."
"...he would destroy your business."
Helen gasped.
"My husband did that?"
Clara continued, tears filling her eyes.
"He told me you deserved a future."
"That I was holding you back."
"I didn't believe him until he showed me the loan documents."
"I thought leaving was the only way to save everything you had worked for."
Rowan felt sick.
"My father told me you abandoned me because you found someone richer."
"I believed him."
"I know."
Clara's voice cracked.
"I wanted to tell you the truth."
"But then..."
She looked at the twins.
"I discovered I was pregnant."
Rowan slowly turned toward the babies again.
His heart pounded louder than ever.
"Pregnant..."
"...with my children?"
Clara nodded.
"They're yours."
Everything inside him stopped.
The world around him seemed to disappear.
The joggers.
The birds.
The wind.
Nothing existed except the two tiny faces sleeping peacefully beneath their blankets.
His son yawned.
His daughter stretched her tiny fingers.
Without thinking, Rowan knelt beside the bench.
His hand shook as he gently touched the little girl's hand.
Her fingers immediately wrapped around his thumb.
Tears filled his eyes.
"My babies..."
Clara began crying silently.
"I wanted you to know."
"But after they were born, your father came again."
"He said if I contacted you..."
"...he would make sure you lost everything."
"So I stayed away."
Helen covered her mouth in horror.
"I had no idea."
Clara gave a tired smile.
"I believed I could manage."
"I worked two jobs while I was pregnant."
"After the twins were born, I cleaned offices at night."
"But last month..."
"I lost my apartment."
Rowan looked around the park.
"You've been sleeping here?"
"Only for three nights."
"I've been waiting for the shelter to have room."
His heart broke.
His children had spent three nights sleeping on a park bench.
While he lived in a warm house only twenty minutes away.
He stood up without another word.
Then he carefully lifted the baby wrapped in green.
The little boy opened sleepy blue eyes that looked exactly like Rowan's.

There was no denying it.
He was looking into the face of his own son.
