Part 2 – The Raid Before Dawn

At exactly 4:17 a.m., the first battering ram struck Dominic Ward's front door.

Not the local sheriff.

Not the deputies he proudly claimed were "on his payroll."

Federal agents.

Simultaneously, search warrants were executed at twelve different locations across three counties.

Luxury offices.

Private warehouses.

Two accounting firms.

A riverside marina.

Even the country club where Dominic entertained politicians every Friday afternoon.

By sunrise, helicopters circled overhead while black SUVs lined the streets.

Inside my living room, Clara sat wrapped in a blanket, watching the morning news with trembling hands.

"...federal authorities have confirmed a sweeping operation involving allegations of money laundering, racketeering, public corruption, and interstate smuggling..."

The anchor hadn't even finished the sentence before my phone rang.

Special Agent Michael Reeves.

"It's underway, Judge."

His calm voice carried years of professionalism.

"No resistance?"

"A few nervous lawyers. One corrupt deputy tried warning Ward."

"And?"

"He was arrested before finishing the phone call."

For the first time all night, I allowed myself a slow breath.

Months earlier, the investigation had landed on my desk.

The evidence had been overwhelming.

Anonymous financial reports.

Encrypted messages.

Witness statements.

Shipping manifests that never matched customs records.

What investigators lacked was someone high enough in the organization to connect every piece.

That someone turned out to be Dominic himself.

His arrogance had become his weakness.

He trusted too many people.

He documented too much.

He believed nobody would ever look closely.

While Clara rested upstairs after her examination—the obstetrician had thankfully confirmed the baby was healthy—I walked into my study once more.

Another message appeared.

Unknown Number.

This isn't over.

I smiled.

It rarely was.

Then another notification arrived.

This one from Agent Reeves.

"We've recovered several phones."

Minutes later another followed.

"And Judge..."

"You're going to want to see this."

An encrypted folder had already been unlocked.

Inside were dozens of secretly recorded conversations.

Bribed officials.

Threats against witnesses.

Illegal campaign donations.

Judges discussed by name.

Police officers accepting cash.

Then I heard Dominic's unmistakable voice.

"If my wife ever runs," he laughed during one recording, "her mother won't save her. Everybody has a price."

I closed the file.

No.

Not everybody.

By late afternoon, the arrests reached twenty-three.

Television stations abandoned regular programming.

The man who'd once posed beside children's charities now appeared in handcuffs wearing the same expensive watch he'd once used to remind Clara how much she supposedly owed him.

Then something unexpected happened.

Dominic asked for exactly one visitor.

Me.
