Chapter 7 - The Public Reckoning

By Friday evening, the story had reached its absolute climax. It was the night of the annual Rivera Foundation Gala—the very event where Celeste had planned to introduce herself as the new queen of Mexico City society alongside Rodrigo.

The event took place at the prestigious Hotel Camino Real. Flashbulbs strobed continuously as high-society figures, politicians, tech tycoons, and media elites walked the long red carpet lined with white roses and velvet ropes.

Reporters from every major entertainment and business network were gathered near the entrance, whispering among themselves about the absolute chaos that had gripped the business world over the past four days.

"Is Rodrigo Beltrán coming?" a young journalist asked her cameraman. "I heard he lost his house yesterday."

"Are you kidding?" the cameraman scoffed. "He doesn't even have a car. But Celeste might show up—she was listed as the co-chair of the event."

Just then, a sleek, champagne-gold Bentley pulled up to the foot of the red carpet. The valet stepped forward, opening the door.

The entire press line gasped as Mariana Alcázar stepped out.

She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown designed by a top Mexican atelier, paired with subtle emerald earrings that caught the light with every step. Her hair was styled in vintage Hollywood waves, falling gracefully over one shoulder. And around her neck, hanging from a thin platinum chain, was the small gold key—no longer hidden, but sparkling like a badge of absolute authority.

Beside her walked Laura Méndez and Eduardo Mendoza, the president of Banco Nacional, who was smiling broadly, treating Mariana with the immense respect reserved for the most powerful figure in the room.

The camera flashes went wild.

"Mrs. Alcázar! Mrs. Alcázar!" reporters screamed, shoving microphones toward her as she walked gracefully down the carpet. "Is it true that you’ve assumed total control of Grupo Beltrán?!"

"Mrs. Alcázar! Do you have any comment regarding your ex-husband's embezzlement investigation?!"

Mariana paused near the media arch, offering a soft, confident smile to the cameras.

"Grupo Beltrán is no longer under that name," Mariana said, her voice carrying effortlessly over the noise of the crowd. "It is now Alcázar Mobility. We have paid off all outstanding debts, protected every worker's job, and opened a new chapter focused on integrity, transparency, and real value. As for my private life... I believe the actions of the past week speak far better than any words could."

"And what about the video, Mariana?!" a reporter shouted. "The cake video!"

Mariana reached up, gently touching the gold key at her neck. "Sometimes, a person needs to be covered in dirt—or frosting—to see clearly who is standing around them. The cake was temporary. The foundation, however, is permanent."

The crowd of high-society elites gathered near the entrance broke into warm, admiring applause. Women who had once ignored Mariana at past charity events now scrambled to get closer to her, eager to exchange business cards, to be seen standing near the most powerful heiress in the country.

At that exact moment, a commotion broke out at the edge of the security perimeter.

Celeste Rivera was trying to push her way through the guest check-in desk. She was wearing an old designer dress from two seasons ago, her hair somewhat frizzy, her makeup heavily applied to hide the dark circles under her eyes.

"What do you mean my name isn't on the list?!" Celeste screamed at the young woman holding the iPad. "I am the creative co-chair! I organized this gala!"

"I’m sorry, Miss Rivera," the assistant said nervously. "The main sponsor of the event—Alcázar Capital—issued a revised guest list two hours ago. Your name, along with Mr. Rodrigo Beltrán’s name, has been permanently removed."

"Call the manager!" Celeste shrieked, attracting the attention of several photographers who immediately turned their lenses toward her, snapping photos of her meltdown. "You can't do this to me! Do you know who I am?!"

Mariana turned slowly, watching the scene from twenty feet away. She didn't look angry; she looked almost pitying.

Celeste caught Mariana’s eye across the velvet rope. For a second, the two women locked eyes—the woman who had tried to build a life out of stolen moments and stolen money, and the woman who owned the very hall they were standing in.

Mariana didn't say a word. She simply offered a faint, polite nod, then turned her back on Celeste and walked into the grand ballroom to a standing ovation from the city's financial elite.

Security officers stepped in, escorting Celeste off the premises as the flashbulbs continued to pop, capturing the final, pathetic downfall of the woman who had thought a social media video could destroy a real queen.
