Summary of Narrative Arc: Julian is haunted by the encounter. He begins to investigate his mother’s involvement, discovering that his mother, Eleanor Vale, had intercepted letters and emails Mara sent five years ago, while also convincing Julian that Mara had accepted the money and terminated the pregnancy. The "two-million-dollar lie" refers to the secret trust fund his mother set up in Mara’s name to keep her away, which Mara never touched.
Julian realizes he must win back not just Mara, but his children. He adopts a strategy of "unobtrusive presence"—showing up at the park, the school gates, or the library, not to demand access, but to prove he is a different man than the coward in the boardroom. He seeks forgiveness not through money, but through humility. He fires the fixer who handled the original envelope and begins divesting from the cold, ruthless aspects of Vale Capital. He learns the boys' names: Leo and Sam.
