Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

Three days later, the financial district of Chicago was buzzing. The news of Daniel Bennett’s new romance with Madison Reed had dominated local news cycles, but the business community was focused on something much larger: the annual shareholder meeting of Bennett Capital.
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with over five hundred institutional investors, board members, financial journalists, and hedge fund managers. Today, Daniel Bennett was scheduled to finalize the historic merger with Vanguard Dynamics—a deal that would cement his status as a multi-billionaire and elevate Bennett Capital into an international titan.
Daniel stood behind the backstage curtain, straightening his red silk tie. Beside him, Madison Reed wore a tailored white cream suit, her eyes glowing with ambition.
"The press is primed, Daniel," Madison whispered, placing a manicured hand on his chest. "Once the board ratifies the merger, Bennett Capital's stock will jump thirty percent by market close. The ex-wife issue will be completely forgotten."
"She hasn't contacted her lawyers yet," Daniel said, a slight crease forming between his brows. "My assistant said she left the penthouse on Saturday and hasn't checked into any local hotels. She's likely hiding out at her sister's place in Indiana, nursing her pride."
"Good," Madison smiled smoothly. "Where she belongs."
The stage director signaled. "Five minutes to executive presentation, Mr. Bennett."
Daniel stepped onto the stage to a thunderous round of applause. Flashbulbs went off like strobe lights as he approached the podium. The massive LED screen behind him displayed the Bennett Capital logo alongside the words: A NEW ERA OF UNRIVALED GROWTH.
"Ladies and gentlemen, shareholders, and distinguished guests," Daniel began, his voice booming with absolute authority through the high-end sound system. "Eleven years ago, Bennett Capital was founded on a simple principle: vision without execution is hallucination. Today, as we stand on the threshold of our merger with Vanguard Dynamics, we prove that our execution is flawless..."
For twenty minutes, Daniel commanded the room. He presented projected earnings, market expansions, and strategic acquisitions. The board members in the front row—men in expensive grey suits who had backed Daniel for years—nodded in synchronized approval.
"And now," Daniel said, turning toward the screen, "I welcome our chief legal officer to initiate the formal shareholder vote to approve the $2 billion asset transfer—"
Click.
The presentation deck suddenly vanished from the massive LED screen.
The screen blinked black for a second, causing a murmur of confusion to ripple through the ballroom. Daniel paused, glancing back at the tech booth with a polite, professional smile. "It seems our AV team has a minor technical glitch."
Then, a new document appeared on the seventy-foot screen.
It was not a corporate logo. It was a high-resolution scan of a bank transfer authorization from HSBC Geneva.
RECIPIENT: MRD CONSULTING LLC.
AMOUNT: $12,400,000.
AUTHORIZING SIGNATURE: DANIEL BENNETT.
The murmur in the room transformed into a sudden, tense silence.
Daniel’s smile froze. His throat went completely dry. "Tech team, turn off the screen immediately!" he shouted, dropping his polished stage persona.
The screen did not turn off. Instead, it auto-scrolled to a second document. Then a third. Then a fourth.
A complete financial matrix appeared, mapping $47.3 million systematically drained from Bennett Capital’s core liquidity reserves over eighteen months, funneled through offshore shell corporations directly into accounts controlled by Madison Reed.
Gasps erupted across the audience. Reporters began frantically snapping photographs of the screen.
"What is the meaning of this?!" shouted Arthur Pendelton, the sixty-eight-year-old lead independent director of the board, standing up from his front-row seat. "Daniel, explain those documents!"
"It's a fake! It's a cyberattack!" Daniel yelled into the microphone, his face turning pale. "Cut the power to the stage! Cut it now!"
Before anyone could move, the side doors of the ballroom swung open.
A woman walked in.
She wore a simple, elegant navy maternity dress that accentuated her pregnant belly. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. She held a black leather folder in her hand. Behind her walked two men in charcoal suits carrying official federal badges pinned to their lapels.
It was Claire.
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Cameras spun away from Daniel and focused entirely on Claire as she walked down the central aisle with total composure.
"It is not a cyberattack, Arthur," Claire's voice rang out, quiet yet piercing through the quieted room as she held a second microphone provided by the audio manager. "Every transaction displayed on that screen is verified by SWIFT codes, bank receipts, and digital certificates bearing Daniel Bennett's private cryptographic key."
"Claire!" Daniel roared, rushing to the edge of the stage. "Have you lost your mind?! Security! Escort this woman out!"
The security guards stepped forward, but the two men behind Claire intercepted them, pulling out credentials. "Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division. Stand down."
The entire ballroom went dead silent.
Claire stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at the man who had abandoned her three days ago.
"Eleven years ago, Daniel, you told the world I believed in you before there was anything worth believing in," Claire said, her voice echoed softly through the speakers. "You were right. But you forgot that I was the one who designed the internal financial architecture of Bennett Capital. You thought I was just a quiet pregnant woman you could throw away with a moving van."
She turned to face the board of directors and the wall of press cameras.
"As a fifteen percent equity founder and former Chief Risk Officer of Bennett Capital, I have officially submitted an emergency petition to the SEC and the Federal District Court. All corporate assets under Daniel Bennett's administration have been frozen as of 8:00 a.m. today pending an investigation into $47 million in grand larceny and corporate embezzlement."
Madison Reed sprinted off the side of the stage, trying to reach the backstage exit, but two plainclothes officers immediately blocked her path.
Daniel looked around the room. His board members were backing away from him as if he were contagious. The reporters were recording every micro-expression of his collapse. The Vanguard Dynamics executives were already packing their briefcases and exiting through the side doors.
His empire, his reputation, his legacy—shattered in less than seven minutes.
Daniel stumbled back against the podium, staring at Claire in horror and disbelief. "Claire... please..." he stammered, his voice trembling. "We can talk about this... think about our family..."
Claire looked at him with an icy detachment that chilled him to the bone.

"You chose your family three nights ago on live television, Daniel," she said softly. "I'm just closing the account."
Without another word, Claire turned around and walked out of the ballroom, leaving Daniel standing alone under the harsh glare of the stage lights as the room descended into complete pandemonium.
