Chapter 5 - Whispers and Secrets

Over the next week, the tension in the Vale estate grew thick, despite the boys' newfound happiness. Nathan found himself constantly watching Claire—not out of suspicion, but out of a growing, deep curiosity.

She was unlike any of the previous nannies. She didn't care for luxury, refused expensive gifts, and spent her free time sitting in the garden, writing in a small leather notebook. She was warm and attentive with the boys, yet around Nathan, she maintained a guarded, subtle boundary.

Late one evening, after the twins had fallen asleep, Nathan walked down to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water. He found Claire standing by the French doors leading to the patio, looking out at the moonlit garden.

"Can't sleep?" he asked gently.

Claire started, turning around quickly. "Oh. Mr. Vale. No... just thinking."

"Call me Nathan, please," he said, stepping into the dim light of the kitchen. "You've saved my family, Claire. 'Mr. Vale' feels a bit formal."

A faint smile touched her lips. "Nathan, then."

He leaned against the granite countertop, watching her. "Eleanor's lawyer sent a formal notice today. They are requesting a welfare evaluation of the boys next week."

Claire sighed, resting her back against the glass door. "She won't give up easily, will she?"

"No. Eleanor believes control is a form of love," Nathan said quietly. "I used to think the same thing. I thought if I controlled every variable in my business, I could keep my family safe. I was wrong." He paused, looking directly into her eyes. "Eleanor said she was going to look into your past. Is there anything I should be prepared for? Not because I doubt you, but because I want to protect you if she tries to use something against you."

Claire lowered her eyes, her fingers tightening around her arms. "There are things in my past, Nathan. Things I'm not proud of."

Nathan felt a slight chill, but his voice remained warm. "We all have things we aren't proud of. I abandoned my wife in her final moments for a business deal."

"It's not the same," Claire whispered. "Five years ago, I was involved in a car accident. I was driving home late from work, exhausted. I hit a pedestrian."

Nathan listened intently, his expression unreadable.

"The man survived," Claire continued, a tear slipping down her cheek, "but he was severely injured. I panicked. For three minutes, I sat in my car, frozen, terrified to get out. Eventually, I called an ambulance and stayed until they arrived, but those three minutes... that hesitation... it haunts me every day. The court found me negligent due to fatigue. I lost my teacher's license. I spent six months in community service and went through years of probation."

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with raw vulnerability. "I'm not the perfect, saintly nanny you think I am, Nathan. I am someone who broke under pressure. If Eleanor finds out, she will use my record to paint me as an unfit caregiver, and she will use it to ruin your reputation."

Nathan stood still for a moment, processing her confession. He saw the deep remorse and sorrow etched into her features—a weight she had been carrying alone for half a decade.

He walked toward her, stopping just inches away.

"You froze for three minutes," Nathan said softly. "I froze for three years. The difference between us, Claire, is that you faced your mistakes and spent every day since trying to heal the world. You gave my sons back their childhood. You gave me back my soul."

He reached out, his hand gently brushing away the tear on her cheek. The gesture was tender, intimate, and sent a sudden spark through both of them.

Claire looked up, her breath catching in her throat. For a second, the space between them seemed to evaporate.

"I don't care about your past, Claire," Nathan whispered. "I care about who you are right now."

Before Claire could answer, the sharp ring of Nathan's cell phone on the kitchen counter shattered the quiet moment. Nathan stepped back, pulling the phone from his pocket.

It was his head of security.

"Nathan," the security chief's voice sounded urgent through the speaker. "We have a problem. Mrs. Vance’s legal team just leaked a story to the press. They are running a headline tomorrow morning claiming you have hired an ex-convict to care for your children, and they are filing for emergency custody at 9:00 AM."
