Part 2: The Woman Who Noticed Too Much

Grace Miller stood beside the hospital bed with a quietness that did not ask for permission. She adjusted the water, straightened the lilies, and spoke like the unconscious man in front of her was still part of the world.
“I heard her,” she whispered.
Dominic’s pulse did not change. But something in him tightened.
Grace hesitated, then continued, her voice trembling just slightly.
“I know I’m just the cleaner. I know I’m not supposed to understand any of this… but I heard what she said in the hallway too. About your money. About your people.”
She glanced toward the closed door as if expecting it to open and punish her for thinking too loudly.
“I think they’re going to hurt you,” she said simply.
A long silence followed.
Then, unexpectedly, she added:
“And I think… you’re not as gone as they believe.”
That was the first real risk she had taken.
Grace reached for the empty tray, but her hand stopped halfway. Her eyes narrowed slightly—not fear now, but recognition.
Dominic’s finger, hidden under the blanket, had moved.
Not much.
Just enough.
Grace froze.
“You…” she breathed.
The heart monitor continued its steady lie.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Grace did something that changed everything.
She did not call for help.
She did not run.
She did not scream.
Instead, she whispered:
“If you’re still in there… I don’t know what game you’re playing. But I think you’re going to need someone nobody is watching.”
Footsteps approached in the hallway.
Grace quickly straightened, resumed her routine, and left the room like nothing had happened.
But when she closed the door behind her, Dominic opened his eyes for the first time.

Not fully.
Just enough to see the truth forming in a new shape.
