Chapter 6 - Promises in the Snow

Winter returned to New York, wrapping the city in a blanket of clean, white snow. It had been exactly one year since the night Elias found me under the icy overpass near the Hudson River.

That evening, Elias took me back to the riverside—not to the abandoned concrete barrier, but to a newly constructed public park overlooking the water. The land had been purchased by Elias months ago and transformed into a safe, brightly lit sanctuary for women and children in need, complete with a state-of-the-art shelter funded entirely by the Vance Foundation.

We walked along the snow-dusted path, hand in hand, wrapped in heavy wool coats. Snowflakes fell softly around us, catching the golden glow of the streetlights.

"One year ago today," I murmured, looking out over the frozen river. "I thought my life was over. I thought my babies would die in the dark."

Elias stopped walking and turned me to face him. His dark eyes were filled with an intensity that made my heart flutter.

"One year ago, I was a man living without a soul," Elias said, his voice soft against the quiet chill of the night. "I had power, money, and fear from everyone in this city, but I had nothing that made life worth living. When I picked you up out of that snow, Ava... I thought I was saving you. But the truth is, you saved me."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

Elias dropped to one knee in the soft snow. He opened the box, revealing a stunning ring featuring a brilliant blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds—the color of the sky after a winter storm.

"Ava Miller," Elias said, his voice steady and deeply emotional. "You are the strongest, most resilient woman I have ever known. You gave me a family, a purpose, and a heart. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me love you, protect you, and stand by your side for the rest of our days?"

Tears streamed down my cheeks, hot against the cold night air. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," I gasped, stepping forward as he slid the ring onto my finger. "Yes, Elias! A thousand times yes!"

He stood up and pulled me into his arms, lifting me off my feet as his lips found mine in a deep, passionate kiss that melted away every memory of past pain. The world around us faded into insignificance; there was only him, his warmth, and the bright, beautiful future stretching out before us.

When we returned to the penthouse, a surprise was waiting for us.

The entire living hall was decorated with soft lights and flowers. Viktor, along with several trusted team members and nurses, stood by to celebrate with us. Hope and Grace were wearing matching white dresses, clapping their little hands as we walked through the door.

Elias picked up both girls in his arms, holding them close while I leaned against his side.

"To the family," Viktor raised a glass, a wide smile breaking across his normally stoic face. "To love, strength, and new beginnings!"

"To family," everyone echoed.

That night, as the children slept soundly in their nursery, Elias and I stood together on the balcony, watching the snowfall over the city.

"No more hiding," I whispered, resting my head against his chest.

"No more hiding," Elias agreed, kissing the top of my head. "Only light from now on."
