Chapter 9 - The Fall of Marcus Vance

A moment later, the door to Miller’s office swung open wide.

Marcus Vance strode in, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, radiating the arrogant, untouchable confidence of a man who believed his money and power could bend any law to his will. Flanking him were two sharp-suited defense attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases.

“This is an absolute outrage, Chief Miller,” Vance began smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. He didn't even bother looking at me standing in the corner. “You’ve detained respectable citizens of this county based on the wild, grief-crazed accusations of an employee who clearly can't handle personal tragedy. I am here to demand the immediate, unconditional release of—"

“Shut your mouth, Marcus,” I said quietly, stepping out from the shadow of the filing cabinet.

Vance finally turned his gaze toward me, a faint, patronizing smirk touching the corners of his lips. “Ah, Alex. I heard about your terrible loss. Truly regrettable. But taking your professional frustrations out on your own family and harassing local authorities won't bring your wife back. My legal team is prepared to—"

“Save your breath for the federal judge, Vance,” I interrupted, stepping right up to him. I reached over to Miller’s terminal, hit a single key, and turned the monitor around so the screen faced directly toward him.

On the screen was the glowing, unedited header of his exact email to my mother: “Project Silver-Relocation: Ensure the property transfer documents are signed by Clara before he returns. If she resists, handle it quietly.”

Vance’s confident smirk vanished instantly. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ashen gray. His eyes darted across the text, recognizing the cryptographic hash signature at the bottom of the document that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the email originated from his private executive terminal.

“Where... where did you get this?” Vance stammered, his professional composure shattering into a million pieces.

“From your own secure server in Columbus,” I replied, my voice dangerously low. “You thought you could buy my family off, manipulate my schedule, and have my wife murdered so you could bulldoze our land for your commercial development project. You thought I was three hundred miles away, completely helpless.”

Vance’s defense attorneys immediately stepped forward, trying to salvage the situation. “My client’s digital privacy rights have been violated! This evidence was illegally obtained and will never stand in a court of law—”

“It won't just stand in court, counselor,” Prosecutor Jenkins stepped forward, flashing her state prosecutor badge right in their faces. “It has already been automatically mirrored and transmitted to the state attorney general’s cybercrimes division. Furthermore, a state SWAT team executed a simultaneous search warrant on Mr. Vance’s private residence in Columbus five minutes ago, where they just recovered the original physical paper contracts signed under duress by Teresa Miller.”

Vance staggered backward, bumping against the edge of the office desk as the reality of his total, inescapable defeat crashed down upon him. He looked around the room, realizing that his vast network of influence, money, and protection had completely evaporated.

Chief Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, land extortion, and obstruction of justice,” Miller said, his voice ringing out clearly across the station.

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Vance’s wrists, the arrogant corporate titan didn't utter another word. He lowered his head, defeated, as state troopers led him away in front of the flashing camera lights of the news crews waiting outside.
